History of The 284 Winchester

The 284 Winchester was one of the first short-fat cartridges back in 1964. It has a 1/2 inch diameter body, but the rim size is the same as the 36 or the 308 Winchester, or any of those in that family, 0.473 inches in diameter. The body, 0.5, right, there at a half inch that gives you more powder column, but you've got it in a short action for efficiency. Did not exactly set the world on fire because Winchester chambered it in an auto-loading and a lever action rifle. Not an accurate, bold action rifle until way too late in the game, but it still remains a darn good choice in a 7mm.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years, I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, become an integral part of our ecosystem, and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see and survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish, or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I bought a BLR 284 when they came out in I think the 90's. I got a few whitetails with it and a Canadian Black Bear.. I loved it. It did everything plus a little more than the 270 Win. did. Unfortunately my oldest son took it out to Colorado Springs ( that and other rifles and shotguns ) when he was stationed at Ft. Carson.. he stuck all his possessions in a rented storage unit when he got deployed to Afghanistan.
When he returned after a years deployment, the storage unit was empty.. and he hadn't thought of insuring them... That was a GREAT rifle.

.284 is making my short list for my do all barrel. I have a Tikka so it is a default long action. I want to go with a 20-22 inch barrel. The other option is fast twist .270. Win. Will a short fat cartridge burn powder more efficiently in a short barrel or do you just need to match the powder burn rate to the cartridge and barrel length? Any chance they neck up the 6.5 PRC to .277?

The lever action you disparage was the 88 Winchester which locks up exactly like a Model 70. I own both. The 284 failed because, like so many ideas of the 1960s, it was pointless. What can it do that the 308 can't? Nothing.

But how is it relative to our favorite cartridge the . 270 W ❓ Pretty hard to discriminate all others close. I do like the shorter cartridges. What do you think about the .243 ❓

No hate, but why? I’m serious, the 284 is not amazing. Other than being a “short” round, why would you use this round?
