The ‘Lift or Elevator Algorithm’ is one of the common choices of system used in hard disc drive controllers to decide how to order the requests for data that arrive. Rather than just responding in chronological order they typically use the Lift Algorithm to in effect sweep the head from inner to outer tracks (cylinders) and back again. This reduces the wear compared to randomly jumping between tracks.

Very awesome video. I just came into possession of two 1962 Otis selectors from a 5-story dorm and about 95% of the guts from the two relay control racks. I have enough good parts to build a motor powered simulator using one selector, a reversible gear motor, and the relays. Should be fun project when I get started on it! Your video is going to be a handy reference!

I did it with a ladder logic on an Allen Bradley PLC and it is far from simple. Actually, this is one of the hardest programs in a professional course where Boolean logic is used with 0s and 1s, which in reality is a proper AI.

Matt please go to Brighton! There is a tiny little old single speed 1950's 1st gen Express lift @ Heals, and some Waygood Otis lifts @ the Old Ship Hotel which is nearby!

Great video I have found the same logic in out 2004 gen2 at work. There is 4 landing calls but all only have a single down button other then the ground where it has a up call. Is this a program error from otis? As the mid floors should just be generic call.
