Late night ELEVATOR CIRCUITS - BEGINNERS WELCOME!

Grab a cocoa and join me as I explain how some of "The Express Lift Company" elevator logic circuits work. Beginners are welcome, as I explain everything from absolute basics using diagrams and then onto the fantastic EVERYCIRCUIT animated circuit designer and tester.

Ok, maybe old Lift logic circuits are not everyone's cup of tea, and it is one of my longest videos. Normally I try to keep them well under 15 minutes, but for people that want to know how the genius's from the 1960s and 70s design some of the circuits that make lifts work before microprocessors arrived on scene, then THIS IS FOR YOU!!

Lift circuits are normally MASSIVE involving hundreds of relays, timers and mechanical floor selector systems, but here I'm keeping everything to a minimum so that even beginners can understand. This means the circuits shown here are a fraction of the real system.

I hope that you enjoy watching, and maybe learn a thing or two!

("late night?" - I recorded it very late at night, so I had to contain my excitement from constructing these wicked circuits else I'd have woken up mrchay and wife HAHA!)

I used to be a technician for amusement machines back in the 1970's when everything was controlled electro mechanically. Loved the job and tracing faults was a great - and frustrating at times - hobby! There were dozens of relays and 100's if not 1000's of contacts in pin ball machines for instance. Soon as the electronics started to take over I quit, I was totally bamboozled by 'little black boxes and boards full of chips'. You could trace any fault on relay circuits with your eye just like the above video as long as you had the knowledge and the help of the schematics, electronics well that's a very different game.

That was fascinating! Thank you very much for your explanation. My plan as a child was to become a lift engineer but never actually happened. Ended up doing doing regular electronic engineering and RF design instead. Great videos!

Awesome!! Ever since seeing a relay based setup at my work, I was fascinated by how the logic behind the controllers worked.  I tried to figure it out and came up with something similar to your explanation but there were a number of things I couldn't figure out.  There were a few 'lightbulb' moments when I watched this video.  Thanks for such a brilliant explanation and I'm sure there are a lot of us out there who are still fascinated by the electromechanical era and the ingenious solutions that were found.

Very nice, for some I'm thinking of the idea to make my own lift simulator. I've got some arcade push buttons that I bought a while ago and a raspberry pi. I've done a bit of game programming in the past so I might have a go at it.

What an informative video, much appreciated!
I just think there's a little design flaw with the two bulbs you added in the end. The interlock (on the low-side of the coils) between the two relays does not stop both lights from coming on simultaneously, it just works on the two relays. But there's no space left on the sheet, so for demonstration purposes this should be okay.

I think having a simulator that can correctly simulate muulti-pole relays would be great. A few weeks ago, I had to reverse engineer a PCB with a bunch of relays and other components on it to find what's wrong with it. (No schematic available). Was quite a mess to unfold all the traces on the pcb to find out how it is supposed to work without having the chance to simulate it.

Well done again Matt, you have really started something now, the questions are just going to keep coming from all your followers. Give us a call if their is something your not sure about from the circuits point of view.

This has inspired me to create my own controller however, given the cost of relays, I'm planning a logic gate system. It's not relays but is still a challenge. Lots of AND gates, latches, and switches.

Many thanks !
I wonder if you could give the name of the electrical simulator and from where can I get it
Many thanks again

nice explanatory video.
i want to connect the cop with controller through rs485 communication can you give me any guidelines

actually this lift cant come to ground because there is no limit for that floor
the thing is your ground floor switch on directional side is directly connected to ground and +ve supply

I wired up my elevator panel with relays, i took me 2 hours it was really hard to do and i had ten fails when i was about to film it didn't work and i was not very happy after all that .
