My parents had a big garden and they used to plant on newspaper and under compost and straw.

This method sounds like the "Ruth Stout" method. We do basically the same thing in grow bags, they have adequate drainage so they don't rot. I like the (organic) Yukon Gold and red that I buy from the grocery store. The regular potatoes have been treated with a sprout inhibitor. Thanks for sharing your tips. 🥔🥔👍

We have never done the surface and straw method before, but after seeing this
video, we have a small mound of soil next to one of our small, makeshift
leaf and grass cutting bins. Found two Russet potatoes that have chitted
and planted them using your straw method. Got nothing to lose. 👍
We grow all of our Potatoes in 10 and 3gal buckets. Varieties,
Green Mountain
Chieftan
Store bought Russets
Caribou Russets
Sarpo Mira
Katahdin
Yukon Gold
All stagger planted. So once thet start maturing, (about 2-3 months) we can just
harvest as needed, mid/late July clean through frost when it comes. 😊

I’m growing Yukon golds, russets, reds, and still need to get some purple fingerlings in. I planted the traditional way- I ground with the soil mounded up. I have a ton of hay, and I think I’ll try your way with the purple fingerlings. Thanks for the video!

I am in South Georgia. I planted in 20 gallon grow bags. The planting medium is cow compost and potting soil. We’ve been getting big rains which concerns me. The potatoes are some red potatoes from Tractor Supply and a mixed variety that were purchased from Lowe’s. Can’t wait to see what we gather when they’re ready. Last year I planted sprouted potatoes that I bought from the grocery store. I had beautiful vines but the yield was nothing. Yes, I learned my lesson. This year I only planted seed potatoes.

We are using the above ground gardening method too this year. I have never heard of mini tubers. I will plant yukon gold and red potatoes. Thank you for the inspiration!

I actually got Yukon Gold seed potatoes, I live in Canada and they were in my hardware store! I did not know there was a blight.

Thank you Prepper Potpourri, I was just wondering what to do with my hay bail. It'll be my potato farm 😊 I've done 5 gal buckets, not great at all. I tend to let them go dry and in the ground was so so. I hope to get better yields using this method. I heard you shouldn't use manure with potatoes. I have worm castings.

It rains too much here for potatoes, but I did grow a planter once in m balcony that did pretty good considering potatoes are not really native to the tropics, here green bananas and Pana are used as potato substitute, but I want to fence a area and grow yuca.

This is awesome info! I haven't been successful trying the methods of stacking them deep. I will definitely try your method this year. I was just at the Territorial Seed store a couple of weeks ago. Its a great place.

I got my peach trees 2 months early. I managed to keep alive and outside in pots with leaves starting for now. My potatoes I did 2 weeks ago. Should be okay. Do it every year and get potatoes even after snow and freezes. Just deep enough to protect them.
