The World's Most Sustainable City (That No One Knows About)

The sustainable Findhorn eco-village has proven to be unbelievably advanced. With hundreds of residents, Findhorn is possibly the most successful eco-village in the world. They utilize solar energy, wind power, use recycled materials for homes and even have their own Earthship in their community. Many residents of Findhorn, some who live in retired whiskey barrel homes, came to Findhorn after finding enlightenment during California’s hippie movement. After many decades of development the people of Findhorn seem to have found total happiness. Would you live here?

What’s the most important thing the world could learn from here?

From its beginning, Findhorn has perfectly reflected and lived by the beautiful and ethical hippie ideal. Not the silly "hippie" lifestyle usually ascribed by most media coverage. This is what we hippies were talking about, tried to achieve.

I spent six months at Findhorn in my teens and did the experience week. It was a miraculous experience to see people, without coercion, and who were complete strangers come into collaborative attunement. I've never seen anything like it as a power structure, which makes me think that it was not used as the protocol for sacking some of the employees, or for taking revenge.

I have followed and loved Findhorn since they began. There were many Findhorn books, now disappeared. The original three, their adventures in contacting spirits of the plants and animals, the startling encounter with Pan in Edinburgh.. my children and I adored it all. I'm now mid-70's, have told people about Findhorn for years, as awareness was lost, so I'm super glad to see any program on Findhorn, to see the new folks and homes that have developed over the years.

Funny thing is I need to finish my thesis for this Friday and my subject is intentional communities (including ecovillages) as a tool for a socio-ecological transition.

Living with the land and in an environmentally friendly way isn’t cultural appropriation of native peoples from the Americas. Especially when you’re in Scotland 🤦‍♂️ all cultures of humanity have had a more tribal stage and it is a good place to look back at for ideas of how to live better

0:53 ~ "Why are we walking barefoot, through the woods, with a bottle of whiskey in our hands?"

A question you'd never hear me ask. My response would always be, "WOOHOO! Let's go!". 😆

Serendipity took me to Findhorn in the early 80s. It was a magical and life changing experience. Happy to see the community still thriving.

The first, and still probably the best. Anyone who knows anything about spirituality or sustainable living or loving the Earth, knows about Findhorn. It is proof that we can be sane if we want to❤️

There's a community called Bryn Gweld in the US. They bought the land and everyone 'rents' the land but 'owns' their own house. This has stopped the rise of 'land prices'.

When I was a kid in the '70s we had a short holiday in Findhorn "trailer park", actually a holiday park. We visited the foundation. My Mum, who was by no means hostile to the whole eco spiritual thing observed that for "spiritual" people they seemed awful fixated with cold hard cash! I was a bit starry eyed about the whole thing but my older wiser sister thought the whole thing was slightly weird.
As to growing huge fruit and veg in a wilderness, it's worth pointing out that Northern Moray has some of the most productive agricultural land. On Earth!

Years ago I read the story about how Findhorn was started. Quite fascinating. Eileen had to go to the cold bathrooms/toilets at the camp grounds to get some quiet space to meditate and get guidance. It was really cold.
That part stuck in my mind because I hate being cold 😂

It's wonderful to learn about this amazing place. Hope this movement grows even more- I certainly will do my best. Although, I didn't like the sensationalist cutaways, and the interviewer was rude and disrespectful with his line of questions.

This appears to be a running theme on youtube: a nice informative documentary, with even toned speakers, maybe even a little low so you turn it up, then boom, screaming, or sirens or whistles, assauting your ears. Only half the video i will watch because my feeling and eardrums are HURT
