Troi was the only crew member that could hear the spooky underscore.

I like that she openly criticises how her character was written. A lot of actors take that kind of thing really personally and feel like a criticism of the character is a criticism of them.

I enjoyed the episode with Troi in command because it was a nice example of how a leader can demonstrate wisdom and come out on top by admitting their shortcomings and trusting and relying on their staff.

She always makes me laugh! “Jonathan, didn’t I go to Starfleet Academy?!” Lol

I love how Troi's voice is so gentle and posh and Marina's voice is just full on cackling Adele 😂

Unpopular opinion: I actually found Troi to be a believable character (if a little annoying at times).

What I liked about Troi is that she _wasn't_ some incredibly brilliant technical genius possessed of an astonishingly detailed understanding of the inner workings of a starship and a dizzying array of astronomical anomalies. Everyone else around her seemed to always have at hand a theoretical answer to almost _every_ possible dilemma. While that's great for moving the plot forward, Troi brought a very different skill set to the table. Her empathic ability saved the Enterprise many times over, most notably in _Night Terrors_ . Honestly, I found it believable that there would be some people on board who would not be technical experts on esoteric gaseous anomalies, string theory, and warp drive technology. Her work to pass the officer exams near to the end of the series was an interesting and, again, believable, arc for her character that had its genesis in the episode where she had to take command during a crisis and was unprepared.

TL/DR: Counselor Troi possesses an intelligence that the other characters lack and stepped up the plate to save the day multiple times.

Even I didn't think Troi was so dumb as to not know what "losing antimatter containment" means. They could just as easily have had her pause in a moment of realization and say, "the ship will explode."

I would pay for DVD commentary with her and Frakes for all the Trek.. Their commentary on ST: Insurrection was hysterical.

Didn’t know Sirtis’ accent was so East End London, Hackney Gurl.

I knew she was a Londoner, but it's strong as hell. Love it.

Troi: “I can tell you’re upset.”
K’Elyer: “Did your finely honed Betazed senses tell you that?”
Troi: “That and the table.”

They needed to decide what they wanted the "Counselor" role to actually mean. At first, it was more like being Consul to the Captain on the bridge - someone who could advise on leadership strategies and intergalactic relations. Then, she ended up being a Counselor, as in someone who helps people work through coping & conflict in their everyday life. If she's the former, it makes sense for her to actually be on the bridge and wearing a real Starfleet uniform. If she's the latter, it makes sense for her to be called in occasionally for a mediation, but generally be working outside the bridge and interacting with the passengers. It's strange that they watered down her role so much that she ended up being basically neither of these things. I personally think it would be neat to really see the life of a ship's counselor - kind of like if you were to follow a chaplain in the military - but I think Roddenberry wouldn't have allowed it because he basically thought all societal ills (including mental health) would have been cured, so there's no need for a Mental Health/Family & Marriage Counselor on the Enterprise. (That's why Barclay is such an anomaly, but also basically a more interesting character than almost any of the women on TNG.)

- He's concealing something...
- What ?
- I do not know, he's concealing it.

Despite her character being poorly written, we could not imagine an ST:TNG without Troi. That my friends is the highest compliment you can give an actor!

I like the Cum Town guys commentary on this: Troi was the empath with actual human emotions to explain to all the nerds how regular human beings behave

O’Neill: So, what’s your impression of Alar?
Teal’c: That he is concealing something.
O’Neill: Like what?
Teal’c: I am unsure. He is concealing it.

I appreciated a lot of what Troi brought to the show. Talking about how people avoid acknowledging a subject because it would dismantle their fantasy, etc. Simple little insights into human behavior that inform the behavior of people we have difficulty with, and could help us see ourselves through a fuller and more lively lens.

Troi was literally in a space cheerleader outfit in the beginning lmao

Someone needs to tell her that professionally-qualified people in the military often don't do the full academy course. Doctors (and mental health specialists) in current militaries do a short course and commission directly to a fairly advanced rank. So no, she wouldn't have expertise in starship engineering. And neither would most other people, to be honest, although they all seem to.

She definitely got screwed over in character development/usefullness. I never liked Troi, but I've come to like Marina, she always has a good story for the fans.

I love how her accent changed over the years. In early TNG she sounds Greek, later British. In times of TNG era movies she had an American accent and now in ST Picard she sounds Australish. 😄
