I skipped past the detail of lifting the small black flap on the cable connector before pulling it out as it happened quite quickly - will know better next time. This is a short video but all you need to know how to do this is in here, so just watch carefully.
Opening is a challenge, but unlike some other remotes you work your way from the bottom to the top side where the infrared LED is, to open, as the clip at the bottom is designed simply to lock it all in and not to be forced open. This clip is also the first one you will engage when the remote is assembled again.

Thank you, thank you, you have made my day and saved me a fortune. It wasn’t quite as easy opening it up as yours but with a little persuasion it popped open. I used a cotton bud and surgical spirit to clean the contacts then two household pins to align the contact holder while I positioned it. Now works perfectly.

Absolutely impossible to put those contacts back together. Ordering new remote.
