The people of both Transnistria and Abkhazia have endured economic and political turmoil in recent weeks- and Russia appears unable or unwilling to help them. Is this a sign that the edges of Russia's empire are starting to fray?

Visited Transnestia and was told most everyone has Moldovian and Russian citizenship. Anyone in Moldova can pretty easily get Romania passport (the rules are very loose). So ya, it’s pretty easy for the people in the breakaway “country” to go elsewhere except they are very poor. Learning that the “Russian” troops are mostly locals adds another wrinkle. That’s crazy

Hey, Georgian here. The situation in Abkhazeti is much worse than it is presented. I have friends whose families are refugees both from 1992 and 2008 who visit elderly family members in the region and the situation is dire. The population outside of Sokhumi is prohibited entry in the city, there is real segregation going on against ethnic Abkhazians (those who rightfully consider themselves Georgian) and Russian "Abkhazians" (people placed there after 1992 as a part of an ethnic cleansing effort). Additionally, the energy crisis has been going on for close to a year now, in mid 2024, the Abkhazeti "parliament" basically gave over the Enguri dam to Georgians because they could not maintain it properly and even then Russia was refusing to support them.

"There was referendum not long ago...." The referendum was in 2006...which is 19 years ago...

There is a common trend here. Russia did not help Armenia or Syria. They did not try to be a negotiator during the Kyrgyz-Tadjik war and did nothing when China took back one island from Russia. The payoff for countries and "countries" loyal to Russia is essentially non-existent and more places are likely to turn their backs on Russia.

Fun fact: Colonel Dmitry Zelenkov has been stuck in Transnistria since December 2014, unable to rotate out.

So Abkhazia is having issues because they actually want to be independent from Russia, and Transnistria is having issues because they are too far away from Russia. Naturally then, South Ossetia isn't having any issues because they do whatever Moscow wants without question, and share a direct border with Russia. I really hope that the least real of Russia's unrecognized Separatist nations isn't the one that lasts the longest, because that would just be really stupid.

some comments:
1. They blame Moldova because that was the plan, not because it makes sense. the purpose of this is to make the actual Moldovan government fail, and there are parliamentary elections soon, which need influencing.
2. Russia doesn't want to send gas via Balkans for the reason above first, but also because the transit fees would be greater. Remember, TN was getting the gas free. They refuse it from elsewhere because they want to keep it free. Good luck with that I say.
So for Russia it was that it's becoming more expensive to support this regime, and also they hope the cause they create would be in their advantage ultimately. We'll see.

I do like this type of video, thank you for informing us about the situations on the ground in both areas!

The Abkhazia legislation to encourage sale of their real estate to Russians has an echo of the Puerto Rico Act 22 to me. Peddled to sound like indigenous population will benefit, but the reality was rich foreigners getting even richer at the expense of the locals.

Ironically, Abkazia also has its own minority, the Mingrelians, plus smaller minorities. This is some of the best land in Europe. A lot of people want it, but it should go back to Georgia, along with South Ossetia.

Given how "well" Russia protected its Allies in Armenia and Syria they should not put much Faith in Putin.

You said "If Moldova would try to attack, it would give Russia a justification or sending in troops...". You hear that more. But how would that even be possible? Transnistria is landlocked, and bordering Ukraine (on the wrong side!) and Moldova. Russia could only send troops via air, but they cannot overfly Ukraine or the Ukrainian coast line. And they could only send them over land through Ukraine (the current front line is much farther to the east). Obviously they could not send troops via Moldova for the same reasons (Moldova is also landlocked, bordering Romania, i.e. NATO territory). I think Moldova could re-take control of Transnistria without any serious consequences, if only they were a little stronger.

Glad to see neo-colonies falling apart. Perhaps the folks there will curse their grandparents for staying there after their military service/work relocation.

An interesting perspective of “ground” situation in both breakaway regions, more stories like this are needed. Most “news” leaves a huge vacuum of details brewing beneath the surface.

One complicating factor for Transnistria is the ammunition depot at Cobasna right across the border to Ukraine. It's one of the largest, possibly the largest, ammunition depots in Eastern Europe and is estimated to hold up to 20, 000 tons of Soviet era ammunition probably in very poor condition. That's enough for an explosion similar in scale to the Hiroshima bomb if it all goes off at the same time.

Abkhazia is an important recruiting ground for meat for the SMO. Turning their economy further to shit is a strategic decision made in moscow to not only punish them, but also to coerce more men to sign a contract for money promises.
