St. Petersburg Russia Electrical Transport 2000
Показать описание
Another Saturday, another great video in this, the tenth year of my channel. The city of St. Petersburg, formerly Leningrad, is home to one the largest streetcar networks in the world. In 2000, when this was made it probably was the largest. As a victim of capital under investment, it may have been in better shape than some systems in Asia or other parts of the old soviet empire, but it was badly run down. After my vacation there, in connection with a visit to Hannover Expo 2000, a lot of the 65 lines were abandoned, leaving 41 today. If NYC had 11 new lines now it would be considered a miracle of progressive transportation planning. Now we can't even build a lousy and under designed BRT in a Queens backwater, thanks to a new national administration hell bent on shoveling billions of dollars down the pentagon sink hole. But in 2000 Russia was able to serve all corners of its second city with quiet, frequent, high capacity electric streetcars and trolleybuses. While I was there for five July days, I never saw a broken or malfunctioning transit vehicle. I don't recall waiting long for one either. The metro was similar to, but not as opulent, as the Moscow Metro, so I didn't bother recording it. I have the Moscow Metro video on my channel.
