i hate Lemon8

Happy Swellmas day 15 I hate Lemon8 now. And it's all Tiktok's fault. Tiktok is on the verge of possibly being banned and because of that users on the app are panicking about where they are going to go next. One of the possible options that has been propped up is the Tiktok owned Lemon8, so I decided to try it out. And not only is it not a viable replacement for Tiktok, it's annoying.

their advertising weirds me out. it’s clear they’re trying to target people who are insecure about their body. they’ve got all these ads where it’s like “my glow up after using lemon8!!” and they show the “fat and undesirable” girl at the beginning and then the “pretty and skinny!!” girl at the end. and they’re like, very obviously two completely different people. not to mention the fact that nearly all their ads are using videos of people who didn’t consent to being used for advertisement. there’s this girl I follow on tiktok who has a really cool and unique style, and lemon8 just stole her video with no permission whatsoever and put on captions saying “you like lemon8? I like lemon8 too!” to make it look like it was purposefully made to be a lemon8 ad. overall they’re just really strange and I have absolutely no interest in downloading their app.

2:17 sending people auto-requests from your account (without your knowledge or consent) is such a red flag in an app.

Lemon8 isn't viable for one other reason: It's region locked. You can't download it in Canada. It only seems to be available in the US, UK, and parts of Asia.

It is such a crappy app. I saved productivity, fitness, and home organization posts. However, the one time I accidentally clicked on a “text with my bf” post it’s been sending me notifications for“he cheated on me” or “is he toxic” posts. The post is a screenshot of text messages and people commenting on it without the creator replying. Like. What is this content?!

i refuse to download lemon8 bc they sponsored a creator and they wanted them to not disclose that it was an ad and when the creator refused to do that bc it is illegal, they said they werent going to pay her and it became an issue. so not only is it a terrible app they are also sketchy.

commenting before watching-- I deleted the app months ago bc of how staff blatantly ignored pro-ana posts on their platform! Just scrolling on the main page with zero history I was getting pro-ana content. Reports were all ignored, just wtf? Maybe content moderating is better now, but it was too infuriating.
