Ooh! My knowledge is about to shine:
In the olden days, Mirrors were backed in silver. Vampires can't be seen in silver or even come in contact with it because they are weak to it. Nowadays mirrors aren't backed with silver, (unless you buy an antique mirror or one that specifically says it is) so a vampire COULD be seen in lets just say a bathroom mirror in mcdonalds. Thats also why you can see them in digital photographs. (old photo film had silver in it as well)
Edit: I just want to say I hope whoever reads this little ramble of mine learns something cool from it :)
