Literally the lens I’ve been waiting for from Canon after changing from using a Rebel to the RP. My Rebel was almost always wearing the EFS 24mm. While I do love the RF 35mm, I missed having something so compact. Looking forward to getting the 28mm soon to have a truly compact walking around option.

I still love the old EF-S 24/2.8 pancake, and i'm waiting for this to arrive at my local store.

I’m a huge fan of pancake lenses. I love my 40mm STM. I believe after 30 years plus of shooting it’s just easier to have a smaller lens than my other pro items. I’ve got some fancy stuff… GFX 50S II I bought from TCS last Aug and GFX 100 as well as Leica Monochrom M11 and other delicious goodies from Sony, Fujifilm, Canon and Pentax… It’s nice to have the pro stuff… but seriously, I love pancakes. It’s always fun to walk around with my 5DS or 5DSR with the 40 STM on it. I wish they made a 28MM pancake for EF. They look a little goofy, I don’t expect a lot of serious work out of it… That’s what others are for. That said, it’s about compact… My favourite lens isn’t my 50mm .95 - that is beautiful. It’s my Zeiss’s 28MM for my Leica and my CP2 28MM for EF.

This is the lens I want for just everyday use. On a recent family trip to Oregon I found carrying my 24-70 was a burden and I wished I had something small and compact to capture family memories.

Absolutely brilliant lens! Dirt cheap for what it is. If it only was weather sealed…

I am getting used to mirrorless lenses that have barrel distortion which gets corrected via profiles in camera or in post processing. I first experienced it on Olympus zooms but it is very common on the less expensive RF lenses (I don't own any RF L lenses so cannot comment on that). I have an EF 28mm f/2.8 IS lens that is my most used lens. It is a bit bulky when adapted to my RP but results are still excellent. But I am tempted to get this pancake RF 28mm for its compact size.

As a huge 28mm fan I'm really hoping for a fast 28mm L series lens to come to market soon. As far as this non-L series lens is concered, I wish they would have given us a f/2 apature instead of f/2.8 but oh well :(

Most Canon RF STM (non L) prime lenses receive negative reviews regarding noisy AF esp. for videos. How is this one?

Deal breaker for me. No multiple exposure possible for a reason that totally escape me. 🤬 I’m hanging on the my pancake 40mm EF. I can’t recall having so much multiple exposure restrictions in the EF mount.

how pronounced is the focusing sound and the extending of the lens? is it unusable for candid street photography?

I am doubt about lens durability as resin element on the back, it is exposured also, very easy to get scratches

budget lens used to be 150-200$ few years ago. Now budget is 200. That much for the state of the inflation

I am thinking about buying a point and shoot to have with on holiday but maybe if I pair this with my R5 it would be better.

My RP is not showing barrel distortion as available. The JPG is not looking great at all. The 50mm and 35mm RF I own are great. So far most of my images of people looks a bit waxy and many times out of focus. Maybe I got a bad copy.
