5 Tips How to grow a ton of dragon fruit

This video is all about how to grow a lot of dragon fruit (pitaya) in just one container. This method is what I call the hang or grow down method where the plant is placed upon a stand or in my case a stump and left to drape down instead of being trained up a trellis or post.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane - the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started SSM in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let's get into it! Cheers, Mark :)

I'm not into gardening, hell, I don't even have a garden, but for some reason I like watching your videos. I like your voice, laid-back style. It's always pleasant to see someone nice enjoying what he's doing. Cheers mate!

I love the action shot moving around the dragonfruit as if its some kind of rare and dangerous multi-headed snake. Very steve irwinesque hahaha.

I was so glad to stumble onto this channel because of this video, after I subscribed and have been watching ever since. I was lucky enough to have a chance at eating yellow dragon fruit just last year as locally (chicago) they sell the red variety with the white flesh that is very muted in flavor. The yellows have become my literal gold standard for suggesting this fruit. I try to give them to people who have never had them, but at $10/piece that gets steep. I recently had a dream that I was in a yard surrounded by this lovely fruit, that is now my goal in life. Thank you Mark for changing my life, just by doing what you love and sharing it with all of us.

Thank you so much. Lots of much needed information for my newest addition to the garden. I was just about ready to remove a huge stump caused by our recent hurricane Irma. Now it can stay and be a wonderful stand for my dragon. Have a wonderful day!

dude, 30 seconds into your video and i'm loving it already. how you bring the Steve Irwin vibe and his mimicry but for cacti, it's hilarious. and your way of doing the hanging down method with the pot on a stand is actually a great idea.

As they say...a good salesman is someone who is passionate about what they sell. You are a lovely man with much passion, and have sold me. Thank you for your enthusiasm and ideas, from Peter of Shoalwater in Western Australia.

Thanks Mark. Your video has really helped me as I've just recently planted some dragon fruit and was in the dark until now. I'm now an avid fan of your channel and subscriber. Now I'm going to venture into more self sufficient gardening thanks to you. Cheers mate. Keep up the great work

Had my first yellow dragon fruit today - DEEEELICIOUS!!! Oddly enough I had tried the red one a while back for the first time, and it was tasteless, so what a surprise when I tried the yellow one. Thanks for the tips, as at $5 US per fruit, somewhat out of my budget and will have to grow my own. Cheers!

Great video, thanks for sharing. I purchased a dragon fruit plant about a year ago and it’s on my patio. I’m going to move it outside and use your method.

Thanks for this video, the timing couldn't have been better! I was gifted with 12 cuttings from mature well producing plants, 3 types (yellow, red/red, and purple outside red inside). Now I know how to plant them properly.

I love putting the white and red varieties together in a fruit salad, makes it look really good.

I did this two years ago and now I have a huge crop of dragon fruit from a plant in a big pot on a bench. So pleased this works. The trellis is going really well too.

Thanks, I have had a very poor excuse for a ‘cactus’ ‘living’ in a tiny donkey planter with out a drainage hole for 30 years!! It was the mother in laws and simply refuses to die, thankfully as I love all sorts of plants. After this extended period it was identified as a Dragon fruit cactus and I’d love to give it some much deserved TLC. I live 100km north of Sydney and this little cactus lives in a micro climate, so it’s time to act, let’s see if it can respond. Thanks again.

For those who haven't tried yellow dragon fruit, it's like a vanilla watermelon. The texture and sweetness of watermelon but the flavor is sugar and vanilla. It's really good.

First time seeing a yellow one 👀. I always treat myself to the red ones and yes they are pricey. One can set you back about $6 these days.
