Breast Cancer / Bilateral Mastectomy / Direct to Implant

Xavia has been a nurse at Houston Methodist Hospital for 15 years. She has been married for 5 years. They love their house in the country and their dog. They were going through the IVF process and having the usual pre-screening testing before you can start the fertility treatments. Her OB cleared her and she routinely did self exams. After one month, she repeated her usual breast exam and found a lump. She thought it was due to the hormones she was taking with the IVF process. After having the lump checked just to be safe with an ultrasound, the doctor came in and told her it was suspicious and she needed a biopsy. Two days later biopsy results confirmed it was breast cancer. Xavia completed 11 rounds of chemo followed by a lumpectomy and radiation before she would have her reconstruction with Dr. Spiegel. Six months after she completed the chemo and radiation, she met with Dr. Lim and Dr. Spiegel and underwent a double mastectomy with direct to implant reconstruction. She feels very lucky to have been diagnosed before her embryos were implanted. Xavia is very grateful to Dr. Spiegel and her team and is very happy with her outcome. She was also able to continue her IVF process a few months after completing her journey.
