Basically, all the food destroyed in these places pale to the destruction a single invasive bug or fungi could cause

I still continue to shake my head at the number of people who cannot, no, WILL NOT understand why California has such a small sense of humor about their Agricultural Checkpoints.
I live in Washington State, one of the Apple Capitals of the world, and the Apple Maggot is destroying orchards constantly.

Australia is particularly strict about this. We had the Japanese beetle which wrecked havoc in the USA.

On a trip back from France I put my single remaining apple on the counter at my hotel.
In New York that apple residue was smelled by a beagle and I had to go through a special agriculture line so they could search all my bags for illegal fruit.
I told them that I had apples in my carry bag but left them in France knowing that it was illegal to bring with me.
So when I was shown to be apple free I was let go.
It had been at least 48 hours with the flight and layover in Amsterdam.
That beagle was really good at his job.

Smart to look for the bugs. Detailed records like that can also help predict and prepare for issues in case something does get in. I wonder what they do with all the data

It’s hard to believe that people still don’t know they can’t take food with them. That is where the waste is😳

That’s it? 120 pounds? Pretty impressive it’s that little waste. I understand it’s a lot of food to throw away, but you get my point.

The Dutch Elm disease came to the USA after WWII in a single shipment of elm wood destined for a furniture factory. Nearly every single American elm sickened and died except for a tiny number of trees who were naturally immune. The same thing happened to the American chestnut tree, infected by a disease arriving on a Asian chestnut. Now the American chestnut is nearly extinct. The risk to American species is very real.

This always makes me think about the old shipping and spice routes thousands of years ago. 🤔 I wonder what hitchhikers destroyed local areas then.

I wonder how much all of the major Hawaiian airports throw away every day, combined... they have to be even more careful.

As a Botanist and Gardener since three decades, i really appreciate this. If people think this is a waste, think about this: I live in Germany right next to a Forest, i used to go there and harvest Wild Strawberries and Ramsons/Wild Garlic/Bears Garlic all the time, now almost 20 Years later you barely find any of these because Potentilla indica, known commonly as mock strawberry, Indian-strawberry, or snakeberry in North America has taken over, same goes for the Wild Garlic, its being taken over by Allium paradoxum, the few-flowered garlic or few-flowered leek, its an Asian species of wild onion in the Amaryllis family, it is native to mountainous regions of Iran, Caucasus, and Turkmenistan and invasive in Europe. So these Neophytes aka invasive Spcies, take over and leave no space for Your local etc. Now think again if this is right or not :-)

Worked in the citrus industry and groves were infested with bugs that then needed to be sprayed. Quarantine areas were then set up and tracking the bugs sprawled out to neighborhoods too. FL orange crop was decimated. Went thru an avocado quarantine this year that expanded out to 4 counties.

Sad waste of food. I wish everyone knew one can't bring it so they wouldn't bother

The audacity of Ginger working in agriculture departmental is pure irony.
