There shouldn't be any live updates on vote counting. The tally should be reported wholesale accross the entire state when all votes are counted. It's ridiculous to get these percentage updates like it's goddamn Americas Got Talent.

Count the votes in private (but heavily, heavily supervised by all interested parties) and then tell the result publicly when it's all done.

No one should be dissuaded or encouraged to vote based on faulty "live updates" for any party.

Just vote, people. It actually does matter and it actually does count.

As a person who works on elections in Australia, I think it's insane to do any counting before the polls close. Any count information MUST have an effect on voting, thus corrupting the result.

It's fun how this is the opposite of what they did last time. Last time the counted day of ballots first then mail in which is why Trump was winning alot of states that suddenly turned blue after counting mail in votes.

The system of not counting votes early is likely not some devious plot to destroy faith in democracy, but more likely an attempt not to have feedback in the system. It has been noted in the past that when some states have started reporting while others are still voting, many people who would have voted (likely far later than they intended or on a busy day) didn't bother to take the trouble to go do it, since they wouldn't take the time if they feel their guy is going to win/lose anyway. When a large portion of the votes are mail in, this would exacerbate the problem even greater than earlier examples would.

I think we should all agree that the *impression* of vote counting shouldn't matter, but the *integrity* of vote counting should.

The criticized policy addresses the impression, but not the integrity. We should't be counting votes while pipes are bursting too...

I have been hearing the opposite. That there will be a red lead due to smaller rural counties being counted first, and a later increase in Democrat votes as the more blue urban counties are counted. Then even later the early votes will be added to the totals, because many states do not allow the early and mail in votes to be counted until election night or later. Unless we have a massive win for one party or the other, I expect we will not know the victor until Friday or even later. I am not expecting either candidate to concede.

Not at all, if anything counting early votes before election day shouldn't be a thing. It gives people a false idea of who would win so it could affect election day turn out.

Well jokes on them because everybody seem to have voted early like where I live in Georgia. It seemed like the whole town went out the first day that early voting was open.

Several states like PA and GA will be counting mail in votes for DAYS after election day. GA also 'cleaned up' their voter rolls by removing tens of thousands of names, so many get 'surprised' when they go to vote and they are suddenly not registered and have to vote provisional ballots, which may not get counted unless the voter goes in person to the BOE office.

Votes should not be counted until election day, because then someone will have an idea of the balance and could leak it, affecting turnout and tesults. However, mail-in ballots should be *processed* prior to election day, so that all signatures are validated and as many ballots woth discrepancies can be cured as early as possible.
