Darkness stirs beneath Tristram. An ancient evil sweeps across the land, plunging it into civil war and terrorizing the populace. A mad king, his missing son, and a mysterious archbishop are all pieces of the puzzle you need to hack through. You have journeyed to the source of this evil. The town of Tristram - now inhabited only by a handful of survivors, broken and twisted by the madness that has befallen them. A cathedral stands there, built over the ruins of an ancient monastery. Eerie lights and ungodly sounds are heard echoing through its abandoned halls, and that is where you shall venture.

this is the scariest Diablo period. The background music, the fact that you can't see everything and have to move forward to see what's ahead of you, even the graphic looks creepy.

The ambience in this game was and still is so frightening. The music with moaning and screaming, the blood splashing when killing the goatmen and the difference between levels making you feel that you are truly getting closer to Diablo, the Lord of Terror himself.

I played this game when I was 12 in '96. It was a totally different era of gaming. This game was incredible that time. I still find it incredible. Sometimes I still have nightmares where I walk around under ground level in darkness, and demons, beasts chase me. I have to hold dark moldy massive wooden doors which are pushed from the other side by strong horned 2 m tall beasts. I love this game's atmosphere. Thanks for the upload!

I played Diablo for the first time on the PS1, and was absolutely terrified the entire time. D1 may be an action-RPG in modern parlance, but for me it was pure horror.

I played it back in 1997 - I still remember that dark and gloomy atmosphere. It was fantastic! Still is...

The original Diablo game is by far the most horror genre in the franchise. I remember my parents had bought it for everyone. Back in the day, ESRB ratings were not always heeded. I started the game using my DOS and when I entered the cathedral, I was scared half to death. I was too young at merely eight years old. They won't ever make a Diablo game with such atmospheric horror again.

I never beat D1 as a kid, but I did love it. I picked up D2 on release day. Since I never beat the 1st game I never realized till watching your video how well thought out the story is. They already had the brothers of destruction and the journey into the east laid out in the first game.

The bittersweet memories are flooding back, my sister and I were trying to play this game without aby basic knowledge of english language, ech time we did something right was a small victory. I remember sitting with a dictionary trying to even play this game.

I first played this when I was 7, with my dad. I was too scared to do all the dungeons and the fighting, though, so my dad would do that and I'd just do all the running around town selling the loot lol

Be careful with those Black Death zombies at 25:15. Each hit from them *PERMANENTLY* reduces your max HP by 1 point! Best to stand back and holy bolt, or at least save your game before engaging and then reload if they hit you.

I would play this game at 14yo, home alone in the dark, nobody home with headphones... I wouldn't proceed to the next level until the ENTIRE floor was cleared of demons and I picked up EVERY piece of loot. This game had more atmosphere than all the other titles in the series.
