Toyota GR86 vs Supra: The Unfair Comparison

preview_player
Показать описание
The 2023 Toyota GR86 Premium has an MSRP of ~$33,500 and my 2020 Toyota Supra Premium was about $56,000 and has some mods. The Supra is nearly twice the price but is it twice the car? And which one is actually better to drive?

The Supra and the GR86 represent the high and low end of the GR lineup. Yes, I bought both. Here are my honest thoughts on each car in this back to back comparison.

Owned a 2016 Scion FR-S, then a 2019 TRD 86 that was Supercharged on E85 making 350whp. I sold the 86 for a 21 Supra but just recently sold the Supra and picked up a 2023 GR86. The Supra was fast but honestly to me driving a slow car fast was a lot more fun than driving a fast car slow. I also missed the manual transmission so much. There is a reason why I've owned all 3 generations of the twins. I will probably get a manual Supra if I can get my hands on one.

Great review. Colin Chapman was right, lighter is better. It honestly looked like you were carrying more speed through the corners in the 86. The 86 is just great bang for your buck. I've actually gone the opposite way when buying tires, instead of going wider, I go a little narrower. You give up a little traction, and the handling limits aren't as high, but in my experience the car seems to communicate a little more clearly allowing you to explore the limits more easily, and at a lower speed. This may not be great for the track, but for the street it works for me. Enjoyed the video.

Thanks for the review. I've owned a supercharged FR-S for 9 years before getting my 3.0 GR Supra. I must say I definitely love driving my Supra more than twice as much as the FR-S. Considering I put in over $15k in performance modifications in the Scion, not including an engine rebuild due to spinning a bearing, the Supra is by far the better choice in hind sight.

Just took my Supra to the Tail of the Dragon and you can definitely feel the weight, 3400lbs. However, it’s handling and power delivery is second to none with the ZF transmission. I really enjoyed it on the tail.

Great job! I watched the whole thing. I have a GR86, I also want a Supra. Never Ends!

Terribly unfair! I’ve owned two BRZ’s and now the Supra 3.0 - absolutely no comparison, and I really enjoyed the BRZ.

I've owned a 13 FRS and now own a 22 GR86. I've test driven the new A90 Supra on multiple occasions and have driven friends' Supras. I still prefer the GR86. It's more fun to drive imo. Power output is actually decent now compared to the last gen, your butt dyno definitely feels the difference. Visibility in the Supra is not as good as the 86. The Supra is still a good car nonetheless.

I've been clamouring for a supra for a while. I was close to saving up for one but life happened and I have to use some of that money for moving and finding a new home now. I hope to get back on track at some point because this is one of my dream cars. The viper is second but only because it's damn expensive and much more of a pipe dream than an actual goal...

Dynamically, my opinion is the GR86 is the superior car for driving enjoyment.

Thank you for doing this comparison! I just sold my 21’ STI to try and get into a built from the ground up sports car and these two are my top picks. I’ve driven the supra and an n55 m2. The supra felt much more special to me and I have to find a gr86 to test drive. Thank you again!

I had the 1st gen, loved it but that torque dip really killed the car because it would happen making left turns at intersections, like come on lol. Now I got a 2023 Neptune Blue GR86 as a daily driver and I think the power is just fine and it's everything the 1st gen should have been, really love the car.

Love both of these "Toyotas"! LT was a great choice for this review. In the canyons, I generally prefer lower limits and lighter weight, so I'd take the 86. There's something about driving a slow car fast that's more rewarding to me. On the track, power is definitely addictive (some of my favorite cars have been 350-450 whp rwd) so I'm guessing I'd prefer the Supra. But really can't go wrong either way, both will be fun in any sporty driving.

Really wish Yota would've just thrown thie 2.0 Supra power plant in the 86 and just offered the Supra with the 6! But everything is all about $ and guess some numbers guy told them it wouldn't be lucrative! Oh well. Great review as always! ✌🏽❤️✊🏽

Gr 86 is better bc half the price/no fake vents and no air buffeting when windows down

I definitely agree to disagree about what you said about the supra when managing the car, but also remember too little T is a very tight road for that high horsepower car. You would definitely have way more fun taking that car up ACH where the road is fast and wide.
