When you hear the word machine, do you think of power tools or construction equipment, like the ones pictured above? While both of these examples are machines, you might be surprised to learn that devices as simple as gears and pulleys are also machines.

the gear ratio in your example being just a single number "0.5" might confuse people, it is better to represent the gear ratio as "x:1" using this format, the gear ratio in your example is 0.5:1, which means for every 0.5 (half) rotations of the driver gear, the driven gear rotates once. the formula for calculating gear ratio is "number of teeth in driven gear divided by the number of teeth in driver gear."
