There's no right or wrong way to make an OC. I just thought I'd address why the public at large tends to frown upon them.

If you make the Oc the main character of their backstory, and have the fandom they’re in come second, they’ll never be a Mary Sue. We’re all the main characters of what we’ve gone through, and with that, none of us are boring or unimportant.

Personally i think both ocs work. Not everyone is colorful, not everyone is destined to become a main character.
For example: Your friends would be main characters in your life, but think about the people in the back of your class, or people you pass in the stores.
Some people would just want to be just that, maybe a tax payer in BNHA and i think that simplicity is okay.
But if someone wants to challenge all might to a thumbwar and win, then im all for that too!

I usually self-insert for coping reasons and i've always been too afraid to interrupt the canon plot too much, but after this i may try to.
But i still confine myself within some limits because no way is my self-insert furry OC going to surpass All Might by just having a cat-quirk.

Honestly, I prefer Mary-Sues to OCs that are extremely plain or normal. I think the Mary-Sues just seem like they're more memorable and fun even if they are a little "cringey". I think that people should be nicer about people's OC's and just let everyone have fun, especially since sometimes you just want to make an extremely OP character since it's fun to mess around with!

This is exactly why I grew out of my fangirl/boy phase. Making your own stories is better and gives you a thing to do.

Here's a tip: People aren't always that deep. Sometimes they can be simple dudes. If you feel you can't give them super complicated character development and back stories, that's fine, as long as there's something :-)

i agree with the statement of "if your character doesn't affect the story, try making them their own" because???/ a lot of my charactyers that are now being put into their own worlds, with their own plots, all came from fandoms!!! danganronpa, kagepro, cardcaptor sakura, vocaloid, warriors, undertale, you name it, i probably had a character who started in that fandom.
