A tip, try a simple chai which is made almost everyday in Indian household.
Just water, sugar, tea leaves, milk brewed and boiled together.
Using cinnamon, ginger, basil(holy basil) leaves, cardamom, fennel seeds is something of a fancy thing.

Another funny thing, chai means tea, so essentially when you're saying chai tea what you're saying is tea tea.

As an indian, I would strongly urge you to try the standard Indian chai from a standard chai recipe, rather than epicurious. Those guys fancied it up
Indians usually drink the standard chai with just tea, sugar, water, milk and ginger.
What you made was masala chai. And even in our masala chai, most of us prefer to omit the fennel seeds.
All in all, the basic chai is the best❣️

Just add some milk, sugar, tea leaves, water and boil it for 3-4 minutes your chai will be ready no need to do those fancy stuffs😶 you can also add some pieces of ginger or cardamom powder if you like

Just boil some water, put a half inch of ginger crushed into it and add some tea leaves and crushed cardamom. Boil it and add whole fat milk and sugar at the end and boil for 2 more minutes... That's enough.. you don't need to add the whole masala pot. Try it .. it tastes amazing (ginger tea)

As a former Starbucks barista, I can confirm that the chai tea is no bueno. When you order a chai latte, the chai flavoring is a syrup that gets pumped into the milk. It's not a tea bag that gets brewed or anything

In India it's called "Masala Chai" and Chai tea seems funny because chai is tea in our language and calling that " chai tea" is like repeating the same thing 😅
