My Grandfather was a Marine and the main male figure in my life. I enlisted in the Marine Corps when I was 20 to be just like him. Before the end, he suffered from severe dementia. He would often forget who my mom, my aunts, uncles, and my cousins were or even that they were there next to him. I was his youngest grandchild and he'd always call me "Little guy". I was only one he'd ever remember. He'd remember me and then call me "Not-so-little little guy" and constantly go on about how proud of me he was for enlisting. When I came back from bootcamp he was gone. He never got to see me in uniform. So I often wonder "Would you know my name if I saw you in heaven?" I wonder if he would be the same as when he left this earth, or if he would be the kind, loving, and smart man we prefer to remember him as before he began to deteriorate...My family tells me he held on as long as he could and only passed on when he was sure he didn't have to worry about me anymore...I never got to say goodbye, but I'm always thankful for songs like these. They help with catharsis and closure.

Today is my youngest son’s 5th birthday and I learned what this song is about, I was honestly devastated when I heard what happened to his 4 year old baby boy and I broke down crying once I listened to the song again!
