For those wondering when it is actually common to say「さよなら」”sayonara” in Japan, it is most commonly said at the end of a school day between teachers and students when leaving the school campus.
In this case, it doesn’t carry the feeling of “goodbye forever”, but because “sayonara” is a bit of a heavy and formal word for goodbye, it’s appropriate to use a for student-mentor setting.

More friendly “end of the day” goodbyes include:
またね！mata ne!
じゃあね！jyaa ne!

When I was leaving my host family in japan to come back to America, my host father said “sayonara” and it made me fucking sob. Fortunately I got to see them a year and a half later but holy fuck the feels were real.

There are plenty of ways to say goodbye in Japanese I’ve once told my boss “Mata Ashita” instead of “Mata Ne” which is implying that I would see him tomorrow. Needless to say, he was eager to give me another shift tomorrow and I ended up going over the clock sometimes. The countless accidental extra shifts drove the differences of goodbyes straight home for me 😅

I had Japanese language extracurricular class in highschool. The teacher would always ask for students to practice conversations in front of the class. One male and one female seniors were chosen for いってきます-いってらっしゃい, but asked to stay there for ただいま-おかえりなさい. The teacher then said, "Remember it well, you two. After marriage, you would say this everyday." 😂
Turns out that the seniors were going out 😆
I hope they are happy now, whether they say it to each other or to each other's spouse 😁

In the Japanese class I’m taking, the teacher explained this, then said “sayonara, ” as he pretended to cry, so that’s how I remember it’s more of a permanent goodbye. Sometimes, my brother and I pretend cry and say “sayonara, ” instead of “bye” though, which is probably bad luck now that I think about it lol.

My fav part of living in Japan with a host family was that I often came back to the house with the most world-weary "ただいま" they had ever heard, and it never failed to make them laugh out loud.

in my native American language, potawatomi, or Ojibwe, there is no word for "forever goodbye". it's said "bama pi" which means "see you later". if someone is on their death bed you still say bama pi because you know you'll see them in the afterlife.

I’ve always heard じゃあね and またね as casual. Short for じゃあまたね

ittekimasu is normally said when leaving home. if we are outside and part ways, we say jya ne or mata ne or mata ashita. sayonara is when leaving someone at the airport
