This year I tried doing exactly this... bought a used (refurbished) 128GB iPhone 7 in excellent cosmetic condition for about $200USD. Saved enough money to get the battery replaced. I now have an iPhone with lots of storage, 100% battery health, and runs the latest version of iOS. And I get to pick my cellular carrier of choice with an unlocked phone. No regrets!

There is one disadvantage.I bought an iPhone SE a year ago, and after 7 months of use, suddenly my motherboard was damaged. The battery life was 88%.
So I prefer buying a new iPhone than a used one.

Amazon renewed is an awesome way to go. I just got an iphone xs 256gb for $500 and its practically brand new. No scratches, no scuffs, no damage at all. Basically got a brand new phone without the box for half the price
