Okay, since this seems beyond a few too many folks in comments let me explain. It's not just any sound, it's the particular frequency or whatever that the malfunctioning home made hearing aid creates. If they had long enough yes scientists should have figured that out, but as the movie shows, these things overran organized society pretty fast. Considering making any noise normally equaled death it would have been hard if not impossible to conduct extensive experiments on this. Their outer shell was impenetrable to anything we had as far as personal arms. These things traveled through space and survived reentry with those hides to boot. So no without the sound the army couldn't do much but get lucky on occasion if they just happened to shoot one in the mouth. They were made vulnerable by the sound causing them to spasm, opening protective folds over their heads. Then yes you can kill them like any other animal by going for the exposed head.
