The 'I didn't have anywhere else to go. ' line is the reason I can tell if something is a cliche enemies to lovers or an original one. They always have that line no matter what.

Not gonna lie, I don’t love “bully-bullied” enemies to lovers, but I am a HUGE fan of “I must out do you” enemies to lovers. It feels way more natural and interesting to watch two people become better versions of themselves due to their feud and build a mutual respect and mild admiration that later blossoms, versus a seemingly one sided one where it seems all sins are forgiven with no real consequences, at least for one of the two in question.
