Easy Magnetic Boxes for Transporting Miniatures

Here is how I made my own magnetic storage case for my Tome Keepers. If you wanted the process in more detail, be sure to check out Duncan Rhodes' "Make your own Figure Case" video guide on YouTube. He goes into much more detail and gives some general advice too...

I was able to find self adhesive sheets on Amazon, so was able to make the process even quicker and easier. If you wanted to see the exact products I used, you can find them listed below. As an Amazon Influencer, I earn from qualifying purchases.

If you were looking for more hobby inspiration, I maintain a few lists of hobby products here...

Good idea, what magnets did you buy and how many magnetic mats did you buy?

Actually realistically achievable DIY, thank you

If you wanna take them to the next level, fill the base with silicone sealant, press the magnet into the centre and cover the base with some felt or chunky card stock to give a super premium feel like an old chess set

Forgot the most important bit, don't put the models into the box until the super glue is dry. Unless you want a fuzzy white fur all over everything.

Nice video. Really clear, instructive and well done.

important tip. put the magnets on the magnetic ground first, and mark the upwards side with a marker. That is the side you attach to the base.

I had no idea these magnetic sheets existed - thanks for letting me know. I was trying to use sheet steel, which is heavy and a pain to cut.

If you can turn the box upside down I’d believe it. I tried this and the magnet sheets were complete garbage. So instead I used a actual piece of sheet metal that I cut up with a grinder.

Nice. I've tried this with magnetic sheets and couldn't make it work. Swapped it out for some steel sheet from Homebase and they stick firmly!!

This is a good start, but 2mmx3mm magnets can be inserted into the basis of clear flying units with no modification of drilling so you're welcome.

You can also use a cardboiard box with a 10$ steel plate in it. less fancy but works great.

I do this for my Salamanders and it’s such a wonderful (and cheap, might I add) solution!

The Tamiya glue just lurking in the background...

Securing them with nothing but superglue can sometimes result in them snapping off, particularly if 2 of your models fall over and the magnets lock together.

To get a more secure bond, superglue a blob of green stuff to the bottom of the base, then superglue the magnet to the top of that, then turn the model back over and push it down so that the magnet is flush to the ground.

I've seen this a lot, but I've gotta know, what are they like on a drop?
Of course no one is planning to drop their case, but it could happen. With a foam case I know for sure that in any resonable bump or drop the minis are all fine.
I've never been quite sure about these cases with no padding and just magnets.
