The best part is "and then I didn't!" 💀

I don't know what's funnier: that the former drug addict still considers an education to be the worst financial decision of his life or that realistically it actually is worse

As a past English Major - I felt that "and then I didn't" to my very core.

In High School, this was my conversation with my "Guidance" Counselor,

GC: What do you want to do when you grow up so we can determine your future development track?
Me: I either want to be in the Airforce, or design Corvettes.
GC: either way you have to go to college, but in order to design Corvettes you need to go to school for Architecture.
Me: OK
(Hold your comments until you've read the rest)
So I first went to a 2 year state school, and I got my first architectural degree. After I graduated there, I went to Norwich University, The Military College of Vermont, where I majored in Architecture and was in the Airforce. My time there taught me 2 things, 1. I didn't need a college education to enlist in the Airforce, and 2. I needed to have gone to an Industrial Design school to design Corvettes NOT architectural school. I kind of want to sue my former Guidance counselor or the high-school. I ended up hurting my back while taking the advice of my CO because I was told to get a gym membership to stay in shape before some training I was scheduled to do, and that injury at the gym ended my Airforce career. Because it wasn't during official USAF training, I don't recieve any benefits regardless of the fact I was contracted and enlisted during that time. Now in my 40's I've stuck with a career I've never been passionate about, but I'm good at it. I still owe $25k in student loans, and I have no desire to go back to college for another degree, more debt and to start over. Thanks John Jay High-school, you sucked then and you suck now.

The last part, " I paid 120, 000 dollars for someone to tell me to go read Jane Austen and then I didn't." 😂

This is still my favorite bit of his. Glad he got the help that he needed though.

“worst financial decision I ever made.”

Years later, after buying a rolex and immediately selling it for half as a way to circumvent his own rules to make it harder to buy drugs, that financial loss was still 5.8% the loss he took to not read Jane Austen.

I am not sure that John Mullaney would have gotten to write for Saturday Night Live if he didn't go to college.

tbh I think every college student can relate to "and then I didn't"

Seeing that both of his parents were lawyers and went to his Alma Mater (Georgetown University), I can't help but think that he could have had adequate counsel to make that decision...

And since he kick-started his career there after meeting Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia there, I can't help but wonder if he meant any of this...

Honestly he has a point: when i was 17 my parents tried to transfer some land into my name (their version of the getting a teenager a car, you cant crash a piece of land though) and they legally couldnt. Well, actually they could, but they would have had to pay for a lawyer, for me, to say "yes, this is in his best interest". Now its a little different, because there is a yearly cost to land (in my case only 200 ish a year). However - he was allowed to sign a contract at the same age, for 120k. To put in perspective thats 600 YEARS of my land taxes. If it was a car loan it would probably be illegal.

It thought him better understanding of literature and how to be a better writer, which helped his career as a tv writer and a comedian.

In college he joined comedy groups, met Nick Kroll, and built a professional network that helped him grow. It's an outdated gatekeeper system that made sense for an unfair society before the internet

Mulaney seems to be doing better than most people in the world—who knows how that degree and the people he met there helped establish a wildly successful career in comedy.

Well, at least it wasn't army recruiters (Jane Austen won't kill you, so thank god for small mercies)
