This should be considered false advertising.

I don’t get why brands do this. I don’t have the lamp thingy so when a bottle says ‘gel’ I don’t buy it. Just feels like it would alienate more consumers than it would attract 🤷‍♀️

I am 30yo and have been a nail tech since I'm 17 and I have been FUMING over this topic for YEARS!

just a little tip, gel polishes do NOT come in clear bottles. they need to be protected from sunlight or they can cure inside the bottle. HOWEVER, you can see that some of the fake gel polish may be sold in opaque containers

It always REALLY throws me off. Especially essie with the opaque bottles 😭 Love that formula tho 😏

It’s one thing when the bottle is clear because then you can see that it can’t be gel or it would cure in the bottle. When they make the bottle opaque, that’s a whole nother level of trickery

It's so true! I've had to Google if it's gel or "gel" a few times in the drugstore. It's really annoying.

But some brands I’ve learned, like Olive and June, have hema in their “long lasting” formulas which imo is so effing shady and even worse than the fake gel, bc it could cause allergies in people trying to avoid gels for that reason.

Yes! I agree! As a consumer I am so confused by this.

Exactly! I’m a cosmetologist and I have so many clients that tell me that they have gel polish on when they have regular. I have to ask if they used a lamp or not to make sure we’re not using gel remover on regular polish and upcharging for no reason.

My partner's mom tried to give me some SH Miracle Gel that she had bought, thinking she had accidentally gotten gel polish. I had to explain that real gel will not dry at all without a lamp. She was very glad it was not gel lol

I actually had the opposite problem once😂 I'm so used to buying these "gel" polishes as I like some of the formulations different brands make. So I bought an opi gel polish thinking it was fake gel when it was actually gel. The really annoying part is that I used to have a full kit of actual gel polishes and everything you need for them but I gave it away to my sister who then completely lost it.

The drug store brands are NOTORIOUS for this it’s confusing and I hate it

As a customer who gets confused, your frustration is cathartic

If it doesn’t say gel polish, it’s not gel polish. If it says gel effect, gel finish, gelcoat, it’s an imitation of actual UV gel.

I will forever be thankful to you for explaining this because I have tried actual gel and I really don't like it. So I avoided EVERY gel-labeled polish I ran across.

This was way more interesting and insightful than I expected. I would have watched it either way, but this was cool!
