I'm a licensed massage therapist who used to train and compete in Muay Thai in high school (a virtual lifetime ago). I remember my coach specifically telling me all leg kicks must land in any area behind the knee and below the waist. Kicking the calf was unheard of back then.

So when one of my clients, a professional Muay Thai fighter, came to see me and her calf was bruised to high heaven, it came as a shock to me when she said Muay Thai and MMA fighters in this day and age are now purposely aiming for the calf when throwing leg kicks. It wasn't until I saw all these breakdown videos on YouTube from the Pros explaining why calf kicks are insanely effective. I wish I had this knowledge back then.

Used to work with a friend that did regional mma. I challenged him to calf kick me. One kick was all it took for me to instantly regret it.

Should have just asked him to punch me in the face. F that shit. Calf kicks hurt like hell!

ended up here after reading Viral Hit (action manhwa) and i was flabbergasted to see how accurate the comic is. At some point, the main character learns how to perform a calf kick, and the enemies he faced most of the time were paralised by the pain, not even knowing how to react to it, and it states that for some time people didnt even know how to defend against it, such a powerfull move...
