Optical 3D scanners produce very accurate 3D replicas of objects in the real world. While these 3D scanners are great at capturing most surfaces, occasionally, they will struggle to scan certain types of materials like dark, shiny, clear surfaces. In this episode of In The Lab, Art conducts 4 tests to see which 3D scanning accessory yield the best result.

Thats a very cool textured turntable. Any more info on where to source one like that? Great video and thanks for sharing!

I am using Reality Capture from Epic Games to process my images. This spray does a great job. My first attempt at processing images of a medical device with smooth services came out looking pretty bad... All bumpy.

My question is: This produces a great underlying mesh with a smooth surface and great detail. Is it possible to then wrap this base mesh with the photos of the object without the spray on it so that the final result is a detailed mesh but wrapped with the photos that show the actual appearance? This is a start, but without the actual surface wrapped around it, it's not as useful. Thanks!

Do you not use a tripod or something to hold the scanner still?
