2016 Lexus RX350 Long Term Review -- Best Used SUV?

If you're considering buying a Lexus RX, you're going to want to watch this video first. The RX was one of the first vehicles in its class and it's been popular ever since it first came out back in 1998. This version came out in 2016 and while there are many great things, it doesn't come without its problems. Be sure to watch to the end to see whether or not I recommend buying a use one or if you should consider the competition.

My mom just bought a 2016 Lexus RX 350 for $23, 000. She couldn’t be any happier, it still feels very modern and drives very well.

We recently bought a 2022 RX had only 16k miles. It was manufactured very late in 2022 and was used by a corporate type. Still has new car smell and look. We expect to easily get 10 years out of it.

Can't beat the Lexus/Toyota reliability, so for a used vehicle, this is one of the top 3 choices out there.

I own a ‘17 RX 350 which I bought for $74, 520 in October of 2016.

Current mileage is 280, 000 kilometers (100+ kilometers daily commute)

Serviced every 10, 000 kilometers.

Total maintenance cost: $25, 000 including 5 sets of performance tyres.

Total fuel consumption (over 7 years): ~58, 800 litres (15, 590 gallons)

Minor issues:
1- Center console armrest worn out and slightly torn. (Did not fix)
2- Drivers middle vent stopped blowing air ($735)

Major issues: None.

The lift gate struts can start to rattle over bumps. Its really loud but the fix is either replacement at $212 a strut or spending $2 on pipe insulator from Home Depot. (Just wrap them and provide cushion and sound dampening. )

I just bought a 2018. It defines luxury and comfort. I have the base trim that has the classy horizontal chrome slabs for mouth (not the hideous black honeycomb) so it looks much better IMO. Also it does not pretend to be something it isn’t. It’s not sporty or geared to be driven hard. It does not have lots of cargo and it’s not sporty or an off-road beast. But it is perfect for commuting to work, getting groceries, driving in the rain all in comfort and style in a civilized world. It’s a very relaxing experience driving one that helps you relieve stress. It is what a Lexus should be.

Get a 2012-15 or 2018-19 Rx. That's what the master tech AMD suggests here on YT. High miles is OK, as long as it has a good maintenance record. Ideally, you would look for one with 60k miles or less, so that you can service the transmission fluid. That way, you should have a Lexus that can last 200k plus if you take care of it by doing maintenance and 5k mile oil changes (or every 6 months). 👍

I find if I want to have better acceleration, I just set it to sport mode. Changes the gear ratio, and I find it quite "peppy". I like Scotty_Gee disagree about it being sluggish. You step on, it goes.

Good cars and the only problem is the the unlucky people who get the timing chain cover oil seeping. It is more common than we like but it normally isn't an engine killer. It will be an annoyance, smell of burning oil on engine and could lead to some early demise of car parts the oil eventually lands on. I can't believe after an engine has been used for almost 20 years, they still haven't figured out a way to fix a $20 gasket problem without removing an entire engine. Ugh! So for the majority it is all good!

Almost every RX I see in South Florida has those 20” two-tone wheels

I have a 2016 in pearl white and it still turns heads. I have 140, 000 miles and have only had to do normal maintenance

I hear that the Rx has issues with oil leaks. Specifically from the gasket cover. I’ve read reviews where a lot of ppl needed that replaced. I’ve also looked at the Carfax on a couple and they had that part replaced. This is a 6K cost at the dealer to fix. I’m torn !!!

Has anyone had issues with oil leaks ?
