In this All Sports History video we'll look back at the four different venues that have been called Madison Square Garden over the years, as well as why is it called Madison Square Garden?

Here's what this "Madison Square Garden History" video covers:

For over 140 years, the name “Madison Square Garden” has been synonymous with sports and entertainment culture in New York City. There’s actually been four different venues over the years that have carried the “MSG” name, and in today’s video we’re going to look back at how each of those arenas (Madison Square Garden 1879, Madison Square Garden 1890, Madison Square Garden 1925, & Madison Square Garden 1968) brought their own unique experience to spectators. There’s been all kinds of interesting events over the years from all star games, and presidential birthday parties to nazi rallies and even becoming the site of an infamous murder.

We'll also look back at some of the more influential people and events in Madison Square Garden's history, like the Stanford White murder and his and relationship to actress Evelyn Nesbit, the great boxing promoter Tex Rickard and creating the New York Rangers, and the time MSG owner James Dolan kicked out a fan for yelling at him to sell the New York Knicks. We'll also go in depth on the 1 billion dollar Madison Square Garden renovation between 2011 and 2013.

What did you think about a potential Madison Square Garden relocation to another part of NYC? Will Madison Square Garden Move? And what’s one of your favorite memories of MSG? Let me know in the comments below!

13:22 that is the funniest part of the video. We need to introduce designated fight zones inside sports venues.

FUN FACT- Some of best NY Pizza slices anywhere in Manhattan is located right across from the current MSG. Pizza Suprema. Been my joint for decades and it never fails.
When you're finished, cross the street & hit some of the local Irish Pubs for a frosty pint.

I definitely think MSG should remain where it is. It’s in the heart of the city, and it is extremely convenient for anyone traveling from outer states to get to the venue. Also it’s been such a historic sight for so long, it’d be sacrilegious to relocate. We shall see

I used to watch the Rangers at the 'old' Garden - which was really MSG III. Back then you could get in for 50 cents with a high school ID. You got admitted to the side balcony which meant that aside from the first row, about 1/3 of the ice was cut off from view. So you tipped the ushers another 50 cents and they would let you in to the end balcony. My brother and I went every Sunday.

Thanks for this history lesson. I know it's a famous arena with lots of events having happened there but could never really find a good documentary or video on this stuff. I respect history but always wondered why the arena was so revered. I get it but if it needs to be moved, everyone could benefit in the end.

That explains why the Devils were the home team at the winter classic at Yankee Stadium (can’t remember the year).

So basically no Madison avenue, it's not square, and there are no flowers.

You only missed one factoid. The entertainer who has sold out Madison Square Garden more than any other person was the late World Wrestling Champion, Bruno Sammartino. Bruno sold out the Garden 187 times. The Garden saluted Bruno when his death was announced by displaying the champs photo on the marquee.

Great stuff. Appreciate the hard work putting this together. MSG, kinda reminds me of how Cobo Hall here in Detroit was. Just the old bldg feeling, all the good & bad games, all the concerts & shows. But mostly every sports game I saw there in '60's, '70's & '80's. Damn, I'm old as

I only have been to MSG once. it was for a concert. I saw Bob Seger play the garden. it was such a great atmosphere at the Garden that night. I only could imagine what it is for a Knicks or Rangers game. seeing Bruce Springsteen playing by MSG, definitely is high on my bucket list.

Would be cool to see a video or two about the Mets in the future. They have some cool history or then also on their venues.
