JRPGs You Missed: Rune Factory 4 (Nintendo 3DS) - A Quick Rundown of Rune Factory 4

In this series I highlight something that may have slipped past your net, this week we are talking about Rune Factory 4. It is an absolutely excellent blend of JRPG, Dungeon Crawling, Harvest Moon, and Tomodachi Life elements that was easily missed in the EU due to it's troubled release schedule.

Rune Factory 4 is the best the series has to offer and it is very sad that we will probably never see another Rune Factory title, the same devs from Neverland did work on Lord of Magna though, and continue working at Marvelous AQL on other projects.

The way I heard it, the reason Neverland's bankruptcy caused RF4 to initially be cancelled in Europe was because Marvelous Games was heavily working with the game's lead programmer in their localization. When Neverland went under, Marvelous' main Japanese branch hired nearly all of the development staff behind the RF games. But said programmer was not one of them. So Marvelous Europe lost access to a person that had been integral to their localization efforts.

XSeed (also known as Marvelous USA) eventually started the localization back up, using their localization for North America (that had been completed prior to Neverland's bankruptcy) as a base. As for why I think it only got a digital release, every main line Rune Factory game (which 4 was) hasn't sold very well in Europe in the past. Compounded this with an initially failed localization for the EU branch of the company, it is likely they didn't see a physical release of RF4 as a reasonably profitable concept. Plus, XSeed only being a North American publisher, they likely didn't have distribution or manufacturing connections outside of NA.

It's too bad Rune Factory might never continue.... It's amazing how the developers were able to make such a balanced game that actually makes you feel something. I'm recommending this game to every one of my friends, but I don't think they're interested. RF4 (the only one I've played) is by far my favorite game, and I'm sure it is too for a lot of people. Tragedy that there's only a few purchasers.... T^T

I am still playing this game after around 3-4 years, with around 20 new game plus playthroughs. I cannot mention how long I have actually played, since my old 3DS XL broke, but on my New 3ds XL, I can say that I have been playing since 4/18/2015, with 466:21 play time clocked in. My level is at 5223 right now (and will continue to climb), with 99% of it from just fighting monsters over my multiple playthroughs of the story, and the levelisers i did eat were just for lulz (eating levelisers to lv up feels wrong to me). I cannot recommend this game enough. It is worth every single penny that it costs, at least IMO.

Just so everyone is aware, the creator of Harvest Moon (now known as Story of Seasons) and Rune Factory now has the creative freedom to create whatever now that he created his own branching company off of Marvelous. The company is called Hakama Inc. and even mentions the Rune Factory series on the homepage along with "2 Working Titles" most likely for the switch. www hkm co jp

Came here after the recent Direct as I've never played the series. Are games with farming and town building easy to get into? I've heard of games like Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon being popular titles, but never got into them because...well, being a farmer doesn't exactly sound like "fun".
