Deepin 20 Beta

The new version of Deepin is an entire redesign. The settings, overall theming, and other features have been changed. It is based on Debian 10, here we look at the various aspects.

The option to change which repos to use in the "App Store" will be reintroduced in a later release. It's noted at the bottom of the release notes article you had open at the start

I actually liked the Settings in the pull-out from the side. I never found it hard to use and I gave it points for being different when so many DEs are, by this point, pretty conventional.

I watch your presentations from the Amazon TV gadget (firestick). I watch the presentation in 65 inch TV splendor, with no means to respond. If I have something to say, I redo the visit with the laptop.
The 2nd "Version 20 beta" installed quite well. I found it kept user #1000 for itself, and other users were counting upwards. If you as user 1000 in Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Tumbleweed, Debian and multiboot, as I do, Deepin admin and other Admins do not line up. 1001 is not lining up with user 1000 in all other non Deepin systems.
I agree with you about the settings panel and notifications.

What is the redeeming feature of Deepin V20?
a) A gnome display option with distributed menu along the left side of the window. One can click the shrink icon (top right) to provide the conventional menu that opens in the bottom left corner.
The previousVersion 15, had hot corners, where this beta does not. With the gnome mode, there is an icon at the top left to re-organize the gnome display into categories, the same as the bottom left menu.
Everything I tested worked. I was not able to install the clang compiler.
I do not read Chinese, and so, I installed firefox using apt.

My conclusion. Gnome with extensions is a better option for the end user than the "Deepin gnome glitter" display without extensions. Deepin does not have the ability to configure the interface with other than colors.
Your review is reasonable. My installation was setup with the following that I did partition allocation beforehand:
511 megs for the boot/efi vfat
1500megs for /boot ext4
20gigs for / xfs
20gigs for /home ext4
 
xfs has faster application retrieval/load times. Since I am not running a database, anything I do such as web browser, or Libreoffice or compiling in C, I cannot tell the difference between loading an application in 5ms (M.2) or 10ms (SSD). It makes no difference to me as to whether Deepin is installed on an m.2 drive or an SSD.



I read their EULA. This is what I understood. "Essentially, it is gpl3 for anything not Deepin. Deepin retains ownership(Chinese copyright)"., You need their approval to modify Deepin. You are free to use. Design changes that incorporate Deepin code needs their approval. They make zero claim for anything else.

I have just upgraded to DeepinV20 from DeepV15.11. There are very good improvements e.g. file manager, App store, screen recorder, etc

Also tried downloading a few proggies from the app store... even though they were displayed in English on the store, it ended up displaying Hangul/Chinese when I installed the app :(
I think that Deepin still has a ways to go before I would seriously consider this distro as a viable option.

It looks way too cartoony and goes a bit too far with the flashiness. It kind of reminds me of compiz back in the day where it was flashiness without function. While I use Pop because of the more intuitive key bindings and the nice tiling feature, I personally think that Ubuntu 20.04 is the gold standard for a beautiful desktop. Their icon set and theme look really professional; best in class. Deepin, on the other hand, looks like they were just throwing in effects to show off rather than to make a cohesive and professional user experience.

I tried this distro a few days ago and its good. Just installed the new Elementary OS and its amazing. Gonna stick with it.

I did a test installation. I have multiple disks and partitions. The /media/logonid/* lists in readwrite mode, every partition on your system. In otherwords, the beta does not respect to only show the partitions within the /etc/fstab

Trying streaming a video from Amazon Prime or even logging in and trying to play a show from the History channel... it doesn't work (trying to do this from Debian 10 presents the same results). However if I try this in either LinuxMint or Manjaro it works straight out of the box.

Anything from China is a big NO NO for me but man I wish Linux Mint login screen would look like Deepin that is one sexy login screen WOW beautiful but then I only look at login screen for a few seconds so no big deal but to show off to your precious Windows friends that would blow their socks off LOL plus I wish if Linux Mint would also have screensavers because I always love and still love screensavers as it is nice to see photos of your travels or family while on screensaver mode it just bring me back to the GNOME 2 old school days yes those were the days but still times change and so does distros but man I am still old fashion at heart for certain things :)
