In '80 I took a trip with my grandparents in a '79 300SD. Mind you we drove between 55 (the speed limit at the time) and 65. During the trip from Chicago to Denver. My job was to keep track of the fuel. We averaged 32mpg with one tank, east bound out of Denver we got 37mpg. This was with two stops and down hill with the wind, but still very impressive for such a large comfortable car.
My '06 Sprinter in mixed driving regularly returns 27. On the rare occasion I travel at a steady 55mph I get 35! (Along with more than a few single finger salutes, but hey, I'm in the right lane)

The goodfather of them all was the 170D from 1949. Its 38 bhp made it a road obstacle but it lasted forever, soon became the best car on the German market when it came to taxis and needed something around 7 litres on 100 km. That is around 30 -35 miles on one American gallon (3, 9 l). The Mercedes people said that it was cheaper to make a journey in such a car than to buy a second class railway ticket.

My 2014 C220 coupe diesel, 7 speed automatic rear weel drive gets around 44-46 mpg on longer trips- my record was 49 mpg on a 100 mile trip at night with no traffic and cruise control at around 55-60mph. It has been remapped to 220 HP and 500 NM from 170 HP & 400 NM. Best car I have ever had.

We haven't had any actual repair videos lately Pierre. Vlogs are great but your channel was built on quality repair tutorials.

Hi Pierre, thanks again for posting another great video! Interestingly enough my 2003 g500 and my 1980 6.9 Euro get the same exact mpg. 12 city and 15 hwy. Cheers.

Haven’t worked out our 300SE at this stage but based on a few days driving to work it’s on par with your figures Pierre
But hey it’s a big car so it is what it is
It’s more enjoyment per mile or kilometres here

Great video Pierre!! I have reported about 19/20 city and 23 highway (staying below 75mph) from my 1992 190E 2.3 over the last 12, 000 miles

So i just had to do an emergency run from just north of Seattle to Beatty NV recently. I left with a full tank and did not fuel again till i crossed Oregon state line. I was at half a tank and 276 miles later. 1999 C230 Kompressor 2.3L. This is the second one i’ve owned. Mine is sedan and first one was the coupe. both very good MPG. I was shocked though. I set cruze control to 68-70 and just drove. All total the trip down to Beatty was 95-100.00 in gas. ( over 1, 000 miles total. ) I think it was 1, 020 miles. These cars are underrated in my opinion. Engine is totally stock not modified in any way. Just well maintained.

I’d like to include the ‘05 and ‘06 CDI as a classic and l add that I got upwards of 38 MPG recently on a road-trip between Northern New England and NYC. Not so much going back as that’s mostly uphill and that was more in the 34 MPG range. This was at “normal” highway speeds and mixed use of the cruise control. I own 2 examples of this car and the other one has NEARLY 100, 000 miles more and it actually does BETTER. The meter regularly says that I’m getting over 40. I’ve seen that meter over 50 on somebody’s car but then again those meters are HIGHLY suspect! Literally YMMV

Can you make a short video on the uses of the fuel economy gauge and how it can be used to diagnose the engine.

Pierre, I am averaging 14.5 with my 500SEC. As low as 11 when I am being an a-hole. ;-) As high as 17 when I am babying it.

I just drove a rented base model Camry LE to NJ and back and averaged 34 mpg. :-) Hard to beat but sure as heck as stylish as a baked potato without butter.

190d 2.5 auto with retrofitted turbo and intercooler.. some city, B (country) roads and motorway..
Keeping below 72mph, recently got 36.9
Daily driving the same to 75mph is about 34.
The motorway and city are partly balanced by only having 4 gears.

Here are some of my stats:

1990 300SE 16 city. 20 highway. 1987 260E 17 city. 25 highway. 1980 240D manual transmission 28 MPG city. Highway does not go up very much. Maybe 30 MPG.

1981 300D with a 4-speed gearbox - I replaced the 3.46 final with a 2.88 from a 1985 300SD - speedometer indicates 55mph and the GPS shows 70mph. Highway mileage hangs around 32 mpg.

I'm an even more proud 380SE owner after hearing those figures. I knew I had to be getting somewhere around 18mpg on my daily highway hauls. All hail tiny V8s!

Great info Pierre. I always thought fuel economy tells you a lot about how good the condition is with all the engine systems and how well these cars are running. What about the 3.0 M104.980 kejet engines in the r129 & w124 140 chassis.
Thanks

Beats the hell out of the 8-14 mpg in my 2002 Mercedes. I can sometimes get 16 mpg when going downhill with the wind pushing me though. Love when that happens ;)
