The Tunguska Event: Huge Asteroid Impact

The Tunguska event was a large explosion, caused by an asteroid or comet, which occurred near the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia, at about 07:14 KRAT. The explosion occurred at an altitude of 5–10 kilometres (3–6 mi) at 60.886°N, 101.894°E. It is classified as an impact event even though the object is believed to have burst in the air rather than hit the surface.

Not the largest explosion in modern human history. The Tsar Bomba was 50 megatons, Mount St. Helens was 24 megatons. Krakatoa, which I consider modern, was about 200 megatons.

Actually an elderly reindeer hunter did indeed die from the blast, their party were the closest known people at 20 miles and described being thrown up to 40 feet

Why does the meteor explode and then its flaming fragments fall limply to the ground? Also, the trees were charred from the radiant energy of the meteor, but they didn't catch fire. The blast from the explosion extinguished them.
