Nina was the first really big event in the story to demonstrate the evil that exists in the world of FMA. It’s meant to take you off guard and completely knock you off your feet, as that’s also what it does to the protagonists.

It lulls you into this sort of dull feeling of, “oh this is leading to something but very slowly, ” and then BAM. As the reader/viewer, you get that moment of realization just before Edward, as you get to see the moment of desperation in the Father’s Eyes the night before, when no one else is around. The moment he realizes he (thinks he) has only one option left.

This isn’t to say he isn’t a monster, he absolutely is, but as the reader, we get that “Oh God, please no” moment just before Edward does. It takes both the reader off guard, and the protagonist, just slightly out of sync with each other.

Same emotion, but one has to realize it after the damage is already done. As a reader, we’re powerless to prevent it, and that syncs well with Edward’s powerlessness to prevent it as it’s already been done, and is irreversible.

It’s a super well-written moment, in both the manga and the anime. That’s why it’s so iconic.

The Nina episode of FMA was the first episode I watched- a TV channel was airing it, but I couldn't watch until the week that episode happened to air.

The one thing the original FMA did better than Brotherhood was the earlier sad/traumatizing events. Nina, Hughes, the snake lady. Those scenes/plotlines were more impactful in the original.

Hughes rain happened like halfway through the series. In brotherhood is happens earlier on. But brotherhood covers the original animation's cannon content in like half the episodes.
