Josh Pate On Alabama Post-Saban (Late Kick Extra)

Nick Saban and Alabama have gone on a run over the past decade and a half the likes of which College Football has never seen. On the Late Kick Extra podcast Josh Pate responded to a listener question about what sort of power vacuum can sometimes exist at power programs and whether Alabama could be susceptible to this post-Saban. Has the script been totally rewritten in Tuscaloosa past the point of needing to be worried or could some of the same external forces that once plagued the Crimson Tide program rear their ugly heads once again once Nick Saban is gone? What kind of coach should Alabama be looking for when that day finally arrives? I love the way Josh approaches his dissection of an issue, even when I don't agree with (or like the outcome of) it; which is a rare thing. This is my go-to program for college football anything.

The worst boosters are in Auburn AL right now. Knowing how to sell wood, apparently doesn't qualify one to run a CFB program. Saban, on the other hand, saved Bama from themselves by being the man, running the boosters out of the big decision loop. I am hoping that when Saban leaves the boosters don't ruin the program again.

The SEC owes Nick Saban a lot for their popularity and their success for the last 15 so years

I think Josh hit it on the head; it’s not who you bring so much as it is who attempts to place themselves in power positions immediately after Saban leaves. Since he probably doesn’t coach anywhere else after Bama; hopefully Saban has a say so in who is hired and how the process is implemented…aka a vacuum is minimized.

I'm sure Nick Saban will have a major say in who takes over at Bama

So all of this is true, but my question is, what prompted the focus on Nick Saban, other than the wishful thinking of rival fans? In my opinion, Nick Saban is at the peak of his coaching career, and has done the best coaching and recruiting job of his career the last few seasons. People talking about NIL and transfer portals being a reason for him to hang it up forget about the fact he's already transcended and thrived even with all the other rule changes have come along like the playoff, clock changes, the "Saban rule, " etc. And I don't think Saban is anywhere near ready to hang it up. But any Alabama fan old enough to remember knows what happened after Coach Bryant left, and how long it took us to get our bearings to win another national title in 1992, then how long it was again before we were able to land a coach the caliber of Nick Saban. It's not like Alabama was a terrible program before Saban, and it is the best coaching job in the country by far in terms of the fan support, the facilities, the "mystique, " etc, so any good coach can do well at Alabama. But it takes a certain iron will (and frankly arrogance) to come in and be successful in the long haul at Alabama. We've been lucky enough to have a number of coaches like that over the years including two of the greatest of all time, so I'm confident we'll be fine when the day comes (many years from now lol). Roll Tide.

Josh Pate speaks the truth. Fortunately for me, our biggest sports donor is a former player, in Leach's 1st class, and his input was very welcomed after our AD made a hire out of left field that was doomed from the start. So big money donors aren't always the problem, sometimes they keep the AD honest. Sometimes, they save the AD from himself.

I really don't know what I would expect out of another coach for Alabama. I mean I feel like Saban is truly a once in the life time coach, but I am probably wrong.

Im a Miami fan so I really don't care if Bama is good or bad cause we all know how the last 20 years went for me as a fan. But I'd like to still see Bama In the top 5 even when Saban is gone because that team makes a really good "Villain"

LSU is still looking for the guy who is gonna fill Saban’s shoes. Good luck!

Do not think Alabama has not started planning for life after Saban. The school has learned a lot about what works and what does not work.
The thing about Alabama is anyone can win there, some off the ex-coaches could not handle the job but still won 10 games in A season.
I would like to see Alabama get A coach in waiting.

As scared as some bama fans are for saban leaving I am excited for the future after he steps back from everything he’s accomplished. I think it’s going to be refreshing to bring back that feeling of every game mattering no matter who we are playing and that’s why I think this past season was one of my favorite under Saban.

Can’t tell if we’re talking about cfb or congress

The next guy could be there 6 years, win a NC like Kirby just did, and that would be considered massive underachievement in comparison to Nick.

Elon Musk will fuse Saban with a computer after a donation from Bama boosters. He will coach forever

There are just a small set of schools that can maintain their ability to win constantly, and those schools are Alabama, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Michigan and Ohio St. Yes there are other historic teams. But these schools have won over multiple decades, Alabama especially! And Saban was smart by telling boosters that they were going to do it his way or no way. Boosters have a tendency to get to a school in some trouble.
