What is a pyrolytic oven?

A pyrolytic oven is a variety of self-cleaning oven. Here’s how it works:

Start by emptying the oven’s chamber, removing all the wire racking and other shelving, then close the door.

Start the oven’s special pyrolytic heating cycle, which will usually last for one or two hours, depending on your model. This will lock the oven’s door and heat up its chamber to around 500 degrees Celsius. To help keep your family safe, pyrolytic ovens always include extra layers of insulation to handle this high temperature, which will reduce any food splashes on the interior down to fine ash.

Once the pyrolytic cycle is complete and the oven’s had some time to cool, the door will unlock. You’ll be able to sweep away the ash with a dustpan and broom, leaving your oven spotless without having to scrub with harsh chemicals.

It’s important to remember that running the high-temperature pyrolytic heating cycle does use more energy than cooking, which could slightly increase your oven’s running costs. And if your oven is very dirty, running the pyrolytic cycle may result in some smoke and fumes from your oven’s exhaust. It’s a good idea to keep your kitchen well-ventilated during the pyrolytic cycle.
