Whether you are already playing Pentatonic patterns, or you only know one basic Pentatonic variation, you are going to want to study this lesson. In it, you will discover one of the best ways for building maximum note recognition along the neck for Major & Minor Pentatonic scales.
The key message that you want to take away about playing Pentatonic along the neck is to learn how to do it without relying on the “in-position” vertical shapes.
When we talk about “common” Pentatonic shapes, we are referring to the way most guitar players train with this scale over a period of time. Generally, Pentatonic practice uses shapes that sit as a ‘complete cycle of notes’ across an ‘entire vertical in-position area’ of the neck.
One of the most popular ways to split up Pentatonic scales is actually one of the easiest. It involves playing the scale horizontally along one guitar string.
To get the most out of this, play notes along with one string higher and one string lower. There will be a “primary” string (that the scale is based from), and a string below or above that follows with the notes of the same scale.
The benefits to this training are all about higher focus on compound notes and learning to visually notice how note layouts are designed across the neck
