When I was in the USArmy in the 1960s the Russian AK47 was considered superior than the M16 specially in the jungle of Vietnam. You could drop it in the mud pick it up and pull the trigger and still worked like a charm. It was heavier but it was very reliable, no doubt about it.

M4:
1. Lighter
2. More modular

America does not have a tight budget, so we spend extra on both the rifle and the logistics.

Worldwide the AK platform surpasses the M4/AR15-16 by millions of units manufactured. The AK is rugged reliable and there are parts spares around every corner of every continent. To me comparing the AK to the AR is apples and oranges. The US is the Ferrari dealer of weapons manufacturing but most of the world drives Fords.
