New World tarantulas may be huge, but their mild temperament and gorgeous colors make them amazing spider ambassadors, especially for people afraid of spiders. People always ask me how I got over my arachnophobia, and lemme tell you, tarantulas played a very important part.

Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!

For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

What's your arachnophobia story? Have any spiders helped cure yours?

You're a legend, I used to be scared of spiders as well. Jumping spiders are what helped me get over my fear of arachnids.

I have a Chilean Rose tarantula called Strawberry, and I used to take her to a school I worked at when we did "creepy crawleys " topic. Strawberry helped lots of people overcome their arachnophobia! They found it impossible to be scared of a floffy little spider with cute spider paws called Strawberry! I absolutely adore her!!😊

I used to be scared of spiders. But after handling a tarantula recently, I am now terrified of them.

Never had a fear of spiders. My first "pet" spider was G. Rosea. She was a beautiful, calm spider and a perfect introduction to spider keeping. Now, I'm addicted. My old worlds give me a thrill, but learning and keeping with proper husbandry is something I love doing now. Great video

Im by no means scared of them and would often look around for them. But handling a big tarantula like that for the first time actually feels incredible. And you're right about their movements etc. If a person truly is scared of them, then starting off with one of these will help massively.

Great video man!
When I was 6 years old, I lived in Westchester New York and one time when I headed into the shower there was a huge tarantula on the celing. Honestly that traumatised me for a bit and I was really afraid of spiders for years, but your videos really helped me overcome that fear, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Thank you so much!

You're an ambassador for wildlife. That's fantastic. Many animal oriented YouTubers are more concerned with mostly growing their channel. Sure you are as well, but you pepper championing the right to life for many creatures most people either ignore or dislike. Bravo to you!

Young man, your growth is amazing! You actually trained yourself, and have become the consummate professional! I salute you 🎉!

I wouldn't say I've got 'arachnophobia, ' but I'm definitely wary around them. I have recently started handling Jumping spiders, and am more inquisitive towards other species rather than afraid at this point, as long as they dont startle me lol. I know someone with true arachnophobia, and she cant even look at pictures of spiders without being freaked out.
Edit: Channels like yours have also gone a long way in turning my fear into curiosity towards spiders

I'm still scared of them but it's thanks to your advocacy for gentle interaction and respect that I'm moving further away from my fear! They are such incredible creatures and I'm grateful you are out there educating to bridge the gap! 👍

This video was fantastic Spencer, in the field I was very curious how it was gonna come out but you nailed the messaging and the edit was super tight, I have been taking notes on how simple yet effective your hooks and intros are, all the necessary context with no fluff. When YouTube starts to feel overwhelming and like I can’t balance it all, watching your videos gets me excited to figure out how to create my own content and keep working to highlight these incredible animals as well as you do. Amazing stuff man!

I have been a little scared of spiders for a long time, decided to get tarantulas to change that and it’s working slowly! Haven’t handled them yet but I have no problem being around them all the time now without any fear!

Well said as usual my friend, you are an excellent ambassador for nature. For me it started with daddy long legs, then jumping spiders, then cellar spiders, now it's almost any spider that isn't in defensive mode lol. Thank you sir.
