5R55W Transmission Servo Bore Repair - Transmission Repair

preview_player
Показать описание
This procedure applies to the 5R55W, 5R55S and 5R55N Transmissions. It is very common for these servo bores to ware, specially the overdrive servo bore. I've seen that on many units the servo gets stuck and it brakes from the base, and the most common issue would be broken and burned bands with Gear Ratio Error codes.

Awesome video Hiram, When it comes to transmissions, You are the man. I've been watching and learning from all of your videos, but i cant find any answers to my trans problem. I have a 96 explorer 4.o with 4r55e transmission. One day the transmission went out as in all the gears that i selected were all forward gears, even park and neutral. The engine was under load all the time. I am a pretty good mechanic when it comes to rebuilding engines, axles, and manual transmissions. In addition to watching you i felt confident in rebuilding this transmission. So i ordered the rebuild kit which included all the gaskets, clutches, bands and o rings and misc. No hard parts. Rebuilt and installed transmission, New fluid(drained old fluid, didn't do complete flush)What i did find during rebuild was that some of the clutches were welded together and the fluid was filthy. Nothing else seems too bad, But i did replace all clutches and seals. Also, I didn't adjust the bands. I just put them back where the were. Now, my main issue. When i select a gear, I get either no response or only reverse. Park is park, reverse is reverse, neutral is neutral drive and overdrive -no response, 2nd -no response, 1st is reverse. I don't know whats going on. I know this is a long story, But if you could point me in the right direction, That would be greatly appreciated.

I did this job years ago and ended up almost scrapping the case when attempting to bore with a power drill. I started with a step drill bit so that the larger hole I was making stayed concentric to the original hole, then finished up with a harbor freight adjustable hand reamer. Worked great and was easier to handle than using a reamer in a drill. Just my 2 cents. Thank you for sharing!

Great vid man. Ive had my truck for 4 years. ive always suspected the torque converter was the cause of my delated shifts, delayed engagements (from p to d especially when cold) and it used to whine. ive replaced my solenoid pack, and valve body a year ago. just had the ford dealership do a flush. truck shifts well but my torqueconvtr never locks up now, 4th or 5th gears. after a minute or 2 at lockup speed, od light blinks and says check trans on the screen. took it back to the dealer...

Not the Malibu transmissions. There is a red screw on cap real easy to find. Then go underneath remove a plug near the passenger side axle to check fluid level.Runs out, it is full while running. The Camaro, there is a fill procedure too.

Hi Hiram and thank your for your last reply... 5r55W  2002 explorer
Question...when reassembling the front oil pump housing what would happen if the selective thrust washer clearance was too little or too much...outside the .012"- .018' clearance?   does this effect operating pressures to possibly cause a Low solenoid B OD flash code?    last inspection of a pan drop there were also signs that one of the carrier thrust bearings failed with remains in the pan....! Aside from losing the bearing surface where it came from this could also effect fluid pressures because of how it would now effect that clearance on the selective washer area??  your thoughts?....   I think I know I'll need to pull and replace it and check proper clearance....

I also tapped the OD servo cover to monitor pressure on the OD servo piston while it is getting pressures when it is supposed to for a 2nd and 5th shift  but goes to about 120psi then drops and holds at only 70psi with apparent non full engagement of the OD band....essentially eliminated the cause of blowby on the servo stem being the cause of non shift....
thoughts?

 thanks!!...still learning here!

Whats up with all the metal shavings? Do they get down in the trans? Do you have to clean out the trans?

Hiram,  Is it a good idea to just perform this repair as a preventative measure, regardless of the condition of the servo bores?  Or should this only be done on a case by case basis?

Thank you for your time.

Wondering if you can help. First off, thanks for the videos, they're great! I have a 5r55w out of an 02 Explorer that I am rebuilding. After going through and inspecting all the parts, I noticed in the bottom end of the pump where it goes into the coast clutch (?) There looks to be what is left of a bushing/bearing. It seems this is not a replacement part since I can't find it anywhere, but I've noticed 2 different style pumps? Some with exposed bearings and some without? Can this be changed or do I have to replace the pump? Thanks

All of Chevy's vehicles have either a dipstick or a rubber grommet/plug where one can be fitted from the factory or aftermarket.
