What is Rohypnol?

The active ingredient in Rohypnol, flunitrazepam, is a medicine known as a benzodiazepine. Rohypnol is used in the short-term treatment of severe insomnia that is disabling and subjecting the individual to extreme distress.

Benzodiazepines (like flunitrazepam) work by increasing the levels of a chemical in the brain, or neurotransmitter, called gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA for short.

When GABA is released in the brain, it promotes feelings of relaxation and calmness.
