** Similarities between Bengali (Bangla) and Persian (Farsi) **

In this edition, we compare Persian and Bengali. Both languages are Indo-European. Bengali is predominantly spoken in the Indian subcontinent, while Persian is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan as well as some other regions which historically were Persianate societies and considered part of Greater Iran. Bengali is the national and official language of Bangladesh, and the official language of several states in India. Persian (Farsi) has influenced Bengali as it was the state language and the language of the courts in Bengal for several centuries.

i am a Persian speaker and i know Bangla too . Now i'm living in Bangladesh . it is very strange to me when i talk in Bangla and i forget a word I just say it in Persian and it turns to be same in Bangla . As far as I know there are around 60, 000 similar words between Bangla and Persian .

This is because Farsee was the court language of the Indian subcontinent for ~1000 years. Indians used to learn Farsee for education just like we learn English these days. Modern Bengali incorporated a lot from Farsee, Portuguese, and English.

Well, the reason behind the overwhelming similarity between Bengali and Persian can be understood from history. Before the invasion of British colonizers, Persian was the official language in Bengal. Persian was only replaced by English by the British East India Company in 1837, which is just two centuries ago. Even now a days land documents contain hundreds of Persian words.

Many Bengali Muslims have Persian ancestry. Beig, Shah, Mirza, Khan these surnames are very common in Bangladesh. Some of the Bengali Muslims are indistinguishably similar to our Persian counterparts. Great Persian poet Hafiz Shirazi was invited in Bengal by then ruler of Bengal Gias-ud-Din Azam Shah. Jubilant Hafiz accepted the invitation. However, he was unable travel such a long distance. He sent his reply to Gias-ud-Din Azam Shah with a nice poem where he expressed his gratitude and love for Bengali people.

Last but not the least Gulista Bosta of Sadi, Mosnawi of Rumi, Dewan of Hafiz and Rubayat of Khaiyam are still unimaginably popular here in Bangladesh.

This is because for thousands of years people from Iran have traveled to Bengal for spreading their business as well as Islam; to be more specific Sufism. It was fun to watch. Thanks for this one.

Similarity between Bengali and Persian comes from two sources: Common Ancestry and Assimilation of Persian Words into Bengali when Persian was the official language of Bengal during the Bengal Saltanat era.

I'm a Bengali... and I already know cheturi...and the added haale is also understandable to me bcz of similarity with Hindi. I know a lot more persan words which are in common with Bengali. Like

Chae=Cha
Jayga=jayga
sabze = Shobi
Darshin= Darchini
Polow= Polao
Tarafdari= Torofdari
Panj = Paanch
and more....it goes on....

I love Persian language and Iranian people. I've no clue how all Iranians are too gentle! At least I never met a single impolite Iranian person.

Kerhâne - we have this word but it doesn't mean factory 😂. It means "prostitute house"

Baba - but it is formal in turkish
Döşek - this one turkish origin word coming from "döşe"-mek with a suffix.

These words are same in Turkish.

I love Farsi, it’s probably my favourite language, so beautiful, I even listen to singers like Siavash Ghomayshi, Ali Azimi, Hamid Hirad and Vigen and more :) As a Bangladeshi, I love that we have so many similarities with Persian 🇧🇩🇮🇷

*It's not surprising that Bengali and Farsi has similarities. Farsi has a long history in Bengal. It was the official state language, the literary language, the language of the royal courts, the language of the courts of justice and the language of the ruling classes in Bengal, from the 13th to the 19th centuries.*

Nowadays, Bengalis are almost completely unaware of this part of their history, perhaps, due to Bengali nationalist politics and revisionism; and the deliberate de-Persianisation and Sanskritisation of the Bengali language since British rule.
