Don't forget all the smaller consumables; weighing boats, glass rods, lab spatula, disposable pipettes, parafilm, aluminium foil, RBF stands (cork), watch glass, glass rods, tubing, funnels, crucible etc.

I'm watching this 7 years later and I am astonished at your insight for adding the variable power supply. When I was younger I was using a repurposed pc supply but am now using a real bench supply, and you are correct they are invaluable for electrochemistry.

You should make a video in which you go through emergency plans. Like what one should do if one spills chemicals, if one were to get into accidental contact, or if the worst case scenario, a fire were to start in the lab setup.

Keep your clamps working by putting mineral oil, motor oil, or even cooking oil on the moving parts and springs.

For my next experiment video, would you like me to another "fun" video (like thermite or similar) or get back to making pyrimethamine?

Still waiting on part 3! Love the videos!

NurdRage offers a great set of videos for the armature chemist and those starting out. Have watched a dozen by now and think they are first rate. Had to toss some money in the pot so hopefully more will be made especially a few more dealing with corner cutting lab gear, best practices, safety and setup! Great Job!!!!

"In spite of what pop culture etc. depict them as, lab coats are not uniforms for scientists." I find this observation about a popular stereotype hilarious as well as absolutely true. Besides being a brilliant science teacher, I love your deadpan humor style and delivery.

This is great information! I am a senior biochemistry student and starting to cobble together lab equipment, so thanks for the tips!

I don't have a sense of smell which has always been a problem to be alerted to dangers like gas leaks or spoiled food, etc. Now that I'm into chemistry, I know certain things can release really toxic fumes. I always have adequate ventilation, but I feel it's best to be a bit paranoid, so I've made H2S gas detection strips using lead acetate. They work amazingly well. I just need to look into NO2 and other gases which can be detected that a person would normally smell in slight levels.

Great video as always NurdRage!

Thanks so much for making the video and the dc-dc buck stepdown power supply idea

love it. I'm setting up a lab so please keep making these!!

Regarding the potentiostat: If you can find a power supply with voltage/remote sense capabilities, you can short the output going to the working electrode to its sense line and use the other sense line as your reference.

Great advice and instructions. Go NurdRage! I like the ideas put forth by Jehu and Tic below.

Potentiostats are easy-peasy to construct on the fly, you just place some sort of rheostat or variable resistor (In a pinch you can daisy-chain small resistors until the desired resistance is found) in parallel with your other two electrodes and use a multimeter to adjust accordingly

Oh, awesome. I was wondering when you were going to put up part 2.

Very educative video (as always), I enjoyed it a lot.I personally don't have plans on doing dangerous chemistry at home, but I am really into electricity (Tesla coils, high voltage transformers, solar panels, ...).So maybe some electrolysis experiments might work for me.😂 Anyways, I love watching your videos and I am looking forward to see another video.
