The Murmansk Operation, or Operation Silver Fox, conducted from June 29 to November 17, 1941, was a joint German-Finnish military campaign during World War II aimed at capturing the vital port city of Murmansk and cutting off the Soviet Union's northern supply routes. German and Finnish forces, including the 20th Mountain Army and Finnish divisions, advanced towards Murmansk, facing challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions in the Arctic region.

Despite initial successes, the operation faced logistical difficulties and strong Soviet resistance. The Red Army, supported by the harsh climate and tenacious defense, thwarted the Axis forces' ambitions. As winter approached, the German High Command decided to halt the offensive due to the increasing challenges posed by the weather and the stiff Soviet resistance. Operation Silver Fox did not achieve its primary objectives, and the Axis forces were forced to retreat. The campaign highlighted the formidable challenges of conducting military operations in the harsh Arctic environment during the colder months.

This is one of the reasons why Mammerheim regarded the Germans weak as their northern invasion failed within the first weeks.
