Probably the most sound advice I've heard from Sam so far. Anxiety kills the joy of living, shout out to all my goons who can relate.

go run 8 miles. see how much anxiety you feel after that. head docs hate this simple trick.

He's right that you can't think your way out of anxiety... and paradoxically, if you attend to the physical side of things, your capacity to shift your mental perception of anxiety and basically uninstall it from your thinking will be dramatically increased. I have found it very helpful to stop calling the experience "anxiety" and actually observe what is occurring in and around me: the physical sensations of unrest and discomfort, the emotion of fear, and the thoughts associated with the aforementioned.

I was an All-American athlete (top 100). never had anxiety before because of the high levels of physical activity. After college, I start getting anxiety because I stopped working out. Every time I exercise, everything goes away for at least a couple of days. Sam is 100% correct. Some people here might be too afraid/don't know what to do. My advice to you is to start as small as possible. Try walking fast every day for 30mins, Or running everyday. Do some pushups everyday, but just start small as you can manage if you have problems with motivation. Eventually, you can build up some confidence and keep adding a little more each week. This way, you won't get instant results, but it will be better long term. If you "need" instant results, literally find a 40 minute body-only high intensity workout on YT. These are called Hiit workouts. This might be above your skill level, so just tell yourself that you will not quit until that time runs out even if you have to go through the motions at times. Just tells yourself "I get what I put in". Take 1-2 days of rest in between Hiit workouts. Fill in the other days with cardio, biking, or something modest. Your muscles will be soar the first couple weeks.

You must zone OUT of your problematic environment, BY zoning IN on physicals activates, exercise, hobbies like guitar, writing, just completely immersing/investing into something that is difficult at first then becomes easier with consistency. Schedules are paramount, the quintessence of consistency, which is leading to success. You remember how fighting games (the 1st Budokai in particular) start out with Novice then work your way to Expert? Well, in real life, you'll start at something that feels like it's made for an expert but then becomes Novice. A Master & a Novice always appear the same because neither look anymore capable than the other because they're both relaxed inside; but it's only you in that ring for life, you vs. you isn't always a fight, because if you want to go 15 rounds, you'll need to get up when you're knocked down, don't let life count to 10 on ya. Say it with me "LIFE HAS ME FOR 15 ROUNDS, I DON'T GET TO DECIDE WHEN I'M DONE!"

This is good advice. Weightlifting is also great for insomnia. It's hard to care about pointless things when you're exhausted.

I started boxing a year ago and train regularly now. Several times a week. I recently injured myself during training and couldn’t work out for 2 weeks. I had a fucking panic attack meltdown and hadn’t in a long time.

I was back at it on Wednesday and boom I’m okay. Also ashwaganda. Shit helps. Stop drinking so much too.

I heard from an ADHD researcher that I suppose is well regarded that the way to refill your motivation and ability to focus/use executive function is by exercise.
I feel better after exercise, what I've noticed also is that when I've stayed up just a bit too long and have to do things that would normally make me anxious I feel fine, calm, like public speaking or whatever.

wish mental health videos would talk about how much exercising just makes you happier in every way. 70% of my social anxiety disappears whenever I work out before school. The mental control I get is crazy as well.

Great advice. I'm been feeling like total shit recently. Getting back into HIIT I'm already starting to feel better.

I had constant headaches, some skin-related issues(basically a few spots where skin would dry up and crack, nothing major or painful, just annoying) and no appetite since I was like 14. Started working out. Felt like throwing up mid-set at first - would get dizzy instantly, as if someone punched me in the head, had to wait for a minute or so to feel ok again. Continued working out. After a year I realized I haven't had a headache/stomachache in last 6 months or so and that I can just go to kitchen and have a meal every 2-3 hours. Skin issues went away also, as if they were never there in the first place, something no cream/balm could achieve unless I continously used them every day. I also became so relaxed I would just say whatever I had on my mind to people no matter the situation. That one was kind of a negative cause I would call people re--rded whenever they did something dumb or tried to awkwardly swindle me or something.

I wasn't even working out till I felt like dying. I was casually visiting local gym 2-3 times a week, no plan, no diet.

This is, of course, good and sound advice, but you also can’t let this physicality get on top of you and deprive you of the mental life that the world has waited over 4 billion years for you to achieve. If you want to be a real Zarathustra of the modern world, a true godlike being, you will not only be in great shape but also do a great deal of thinking, reading (things that *you* are interested in, pragmatism and coolness be damned), studying, practicing, learning.
The result will be that the totality, the synecdoche of yr mind/body will be so fucking magnificent that everyday pettinesses will seem like a joke. No worry, no despair, just pure, obliterated light pleasure. You’ll be like, you’ll be like

If we imagine humans in less advanced state, sitting around "doing nothing" makes you more likely to starve and be socially ostrasized. It makes sense that overtime creatures who didnt have a negative association with sloth and inaction would have failed at much higher rates than creatures who experienced a soft mental trauma at inaction.

There are obviously spiritual dimensions to this, but from a purely natural outlook this makes perfect sense.

Anxiety and depression are meant to be punishment programs that run when youre doing something that is bad for you and, in an environment where you cant just sit in a room, click buttons, and have food appear, this would solve itself.

Pretty spot on, 4E cog sci takes this approach that the mind and body are embodied with one another
