I love his voice variation in this song. He goes from "Bad as with that high pitched nervous crack, to the "They tol' me you were no good, " deep, mafia type. He's not traditional, but he's good!

Lyrics
You're the head on the spear
You're the nail on the cross
You're the fly in my beer
You're the key that got lost
You're the letter from Jesus on the bathroom wall
You're Mother Superior with only a bra
You're the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
I'm the hat on the bed
I'm the coffee instead
The fish or cut bait
I'm the detective up late
I'm the blood on the floor
The thunder and the roar
I'm the boat that won't sink
I just won't sleep a wink
You're the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
No good you say
Well that's good enough for me
You're the wreath that caught fire
You're the preach to the choir
You bite down on the sheet
But your teeth have been wired
You skid in the rain
You're trying to shift
You're grinding the gears
You're trying to shift
And you're the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
She's the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
They told me you were no good
I know you'll take care of all my needs
You're the same kind of bad as me
I'm the mattress in the back
I'm the old gunnysack
I'm the one with the gun
Most likely to run
I'm the car in the weeds
If you cut me I'll bleed
You're the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
Same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
You're the same kind of bad as me
Uno, dos, tres, quatro
Same kind of bad as me

This is an interesting expression.
This is a beat poet...an alley cat...a people person who doesn't like people...witty and frantic...an American treasure.

Sometimes, listenting to Tom Waits is like taking a bite out of an impossibly sweet piece of fruit, only to discover that it is because it is rotten... and then wanting another bite. When I listen to the radio, or even my music collection, I start to feel like I've been listening to the same 10 songs for months. Except for Tom Waits. It's like getting a blood transusfusion.
His music is wild, elemental. It's never been domesticated. It's the essence of music - without artificial flavoring.

Me and my dog love to sing along to this song. Thank you!

Tom Waits is America without the bubblegum.

This guy has turned down tons of promotional-slot media, like car commercials. He keeps it so completely true to the music. And I hate phrases like "true to the music" but, shit, that's exactly what he's doing. Who else makes music like anything you'll hear on Rain Dogs, Alice, Orphans, Black Rider. The guy is truly a musical idol.

Waits' music as of late seems closer to performance art than what one might think of as music. This isn't a bad thing, it just makes it difficult to use in a setting such as background music, what Waits once characterized as "not too interruptive." It demands attention, and keeps it. Keep on truckin', Tom. Your fans love you.

I, maybe like most people. HEARD Tom before Iever saw a picture of him. I always imagined him as a 60 to 70 something, old, worn out, beaten down, smokes, and drinks too much, backwoods, Lousiana, black water, swamp doggin', seen it all, musical genius, FULL OF SOUL, bluesman, that to my ear... Was BLACK!!! Boy was I shocked and amazed when I first saw the "Rain Dogs" It's so amazing how one man with so many textures and tambres to his voice, can have so much SOUL, and EMOTION, and make you sob your eyes out by the end of one song, and thean laughing your ass off by the end of the next song. Without having to change albums!!! No greatest hits, or best of's to make that happen!!! It happens on every album, and sometime within the same song!!! Only Bob Dylan, could possibly hang!!! I would love to see a friendly, on the spot song writing and imporv contest between the two!!! That would be wickid awesome!!!

Alright, this man has just made it into my list of musical legends

What I love so much about this song is that everyone can relate. It's cynical yet playful and innocent. I rarely embrace the bad and this song gives me a great avenue to do so. Thanks, Tom!

"not your mothers or your grandmothers" raunch music"...I *AM* a grandmother, properly raised and conservatively lived, for 68 years who just 2 years ago discovered Tom (I can call him by his first name because I'm older than he is). Now he is all I listen to. I have loved him in my past life, present, and future, high and straight, married and un, soft or frenetic. He is GODGENIUS! Raunch on, Tom....
